Modern aircraft are loaded with technology to the extent that pilots are almost redundant.modern cars seem overloaded with tech' to the extent that Diy maintenance is for most owners a impossible.
I recently heard calls for aircraft to be de--tech'ed that would allow pilots to regain full control over the aircraft. Perhaps the time has come to de--tech cars.?

I think with most modern things it's increasingly the soft mushy part of the system that lets it down.

I think there's a perception difference however. I think that a medical specialism which, say, misdiagnosed 20% of difficult-to-spot cancers would be seen as more acceptable than a machine that misdiagnosed 10%.

Likewise when a Google car eventually kills someone it will create far more frothing at the mouth than the much higher human statistics do.

And let's not forget that male drivers in the UK are more likely to kill other humans and themselves than female drivers mile for mile, but you don't hear men clamouring to be banned on safety grounds. ;-)

I'm not sure what you mean by some (most) of these statements. hehe

Pilots aren't almost redundant and already have or can take full control of aircraft. Perhaps you have some specific examples to explain your points better or is it more a sort of general rambling about stuff.

lane assist - keep your eyes on the fking road
auto wipers - you should be able to fkING SEE WITH YOUR EYES that it's raining
auto headlights - if you can't notice it getting darker you're a fking idiot
keyless proximity entry - is it really that hard to get the keys out your fking pocket? If you're a woman with a fking handbag then don't shove it in the main compartment only for it to wiggle it's way down to the bottom.

i'm sure there is more.

I'm not sure the tech in cars prevents DIY maintenance. The oily bits are fundamentally the same as they've been for the past 100 years. Any tech bits can be interrogated by via the universal access port (OBD11) and more detailed diagnosis can be done by anyone who knows how to use a laptop.

The cars may have evolved, so perhaps it's time to update the DIY toolkit?

Considering just about every aircraft crash over the last few decades has been due to pilot error rather than system error then the argument is flawed.

^^^ Precisely. This hankering for some non-existent, bygone, golden era never ceases to amaze me.

The one that crashed into the Hudson Rover would have tried to head to a nearby airfield and crashed were it for the computers.

My understanding is that pilots on many of the modern commercial aircraft use their skills manually for take-off and landings.
Pilots have become evermore reliant upon the tech' of the aircraft. Apparently pilots are becoming conditioned to react to computer read outs rather than their own experiences. So yes pilots can still take full control of their aircraft but react to computer analysis. Aircraft accidents have been attributed to pilots reacting to situations diagnosed by computers which were later to be found to be false or incorrect information. In short computer said!

Cars, sure a simple oil and filter change can still be a DIY job but generally it is now a display on the dashboard to advise of a fault, worn component or maintenance required. Again reliance on computer, fine until it goes pear shape. We were considering buying a replacement car in the form of an relatively old Jag but understand the car has so many gizmo's computer controlled the slightest problem would require a trip to the garage for analysis before repair. Are these gismo's
really required, which is where I came in.

Rear brake pads that need to be retracted with the diagnostic computer to reset the electronic handbrake?
Oil changes that need to have EXACTLY the right oil (from fifty different specs) used and the oil condition check system and service interval calculator reset?
Electronic dampers?
Ever-more-cramped engine bays?

My point is that a major assumption is always the computer is never wrong and must always be relied upon-- computer said!! Exactly as you demonstrate in your post. Not only that but we now have bolt on parts in the hope the fault will be fixed, fitters not mechanics.

Your first 3 could potentially save major car accidents , your last one could save potential muggins.

Now can you please tell me why you wouldn't want to do that?

It is annoying not being able to change your brake pads, etc. without a computer, though.
