Hi, I'm needing some help and advice and thought here would be good place to go. I own a 61plate Seat ibiza 1.6tdi. Recently the power steering had been cutting out and the power steering light coming on. I took it to the garage that I had bought the car from(parks of hamilton in East kilbride) and was told that my warranty ran out the next day. They looked at the car and phoned me the following day to say that my car was needing a new power steering rack and that it wasn't covered by the warranty. I was told that even if I had brought the car in a month ago it wouldnt have been covered under warranty and is going to cost me £1080. I only bought the car a year ago hence the warranty running out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Craig

Well...check the warranty T&Cs? I would expect a steering rack to be covered - not a wear item.

You need to read the warranty to see if that statement is correct - someone who is more conversant with them might be along soon to offer a better steer....

Yes, this is going to come down to the wording of the warranty under the "what's covered" section.

For the sake of £20 get a giant turkey baster type thing from machine mart and some new fluid.

Replaced [the majority] of fluid in my old E46 from the Engine bay which quietened and improved the steering feel.

Might achive the square root of fk all, might save you a fortune.

common fault on the Ibiza. normally the steering angle sensor. take it to your local independent VAG garage, get them to check it on VAGCOM and see what the fault code is. don't get too worked up yet if it is out of warranty, could be a cheap fix anyway. get it checked first by someone else.

I know it's not the fluid, it has been checked. Having searched a bit myself on the internet I seen it seemed to be a common problem but didn't seem to a definitive answer to what was causing it.

Well after going down and speaking to someone more senior they are now saying that my warranty is invalid because I had it serviced elsewhere and are quoting me £780 to get it fixed. But I have now got it booked in to seat themselves to have a look at.

fking chancers. They can't stipulate that.

Read that and get swatting up on your invoices.

Different rules for used car warranties, no? This probably depends whether the expired warranty was a new, manufacturers warranty or a used car warranty.
