I'm beginning to become genuinely worried about the OP's abilities to successfully get through a day unaided.

Lolled at this.

OP cambelts generally last a long longer than the idiots that compile the service schedule will have you believe. Especially on something like a Clio.
Just buy it, drive it normally i.e dont rag the tits off it when cold and downshift too early, and get it changed.
Or if you're really worried remove the cambelt after the sale and put the belt around your jeans on there instead (if it was purchased from somewhere reputable, not Primark), good old mechanics trick that is

Wouldn't put me off (bargaining point) - do a visual inspection, if it looks OK, chances are it will make it home!

If it looks like the waistband from a 40 year old pair of y-fronts, you might want to avoid.

A friend of mine bought a Nissan Almere tino petrol new in 2003

He still has it and it's still on the original cam-belt , he says he'll drive it until it goes bang

Would you buy a car with this?

Seen a clio 182 which had its cambelt changed 25k ago, but 6 1/2 years ago which is a year and half longer than it should have been.

Would you take the risk and buy it, and get it done asap?
My first mk1 Mondeo - interval is 70k. When it got to 140k I had it changed - turned out it was on the original belt.

There will always be someone who's belt goes 3 miles or a day after the interval is due, but on the whole, a few miles / months should be just fine.

My sons 182 was in a similar position - he drove for a year then had it changed - have you seen the cost of a cambelt change on one of those?? Its usually tensioners and pulleys that fail before belts

Tell him not to worry about the Almera's timing belt, it's made out of steel after all wink

It was changed 25k ago? So it will be fine then won't it? Then at 70k (or whatever the required interval is) you change it....

Interestingly change intervals for the same engine and belt can vary between countries - the USA often gets longer change intervals than we do. Intervals on UK cars are generally very conservative, don't know if climate is an issue

On the cam belt, that should be fine. An old cam belt won't cause any problems as long as it does not fail. My old Clio died at 130k from electrical stuff and was still on the original belt, BUT that does not mean it won't go. The timelines they give are conservative, but if it was me I would want it change asap on a nice car (mine was a shed Clio 1.1 that I got with 90k for £1k so didn't care). However, if you are not that sure of cars, do you know enough to work out if anything else has been neglected?

The price will vary.

Mine at a Renault Specialists was £625 including the dephaser, water pump and a wheel alignment.

Had a belt break (on a clio funnily enough) due to exceeding time recomendations (well in on the mileage).
