Z in number plate

In the old reg days a 'Z' in the number plate meant the car came from Northern Ireland.

Does this mean the same in the most recent number plate formats?

- We will not use I, Q or Z in local memory tag identifiers (ie where HX = Hampshire & Dorset).
- We will still issue existing ‘Q’ marks.
- We will only use Z as a random letter.

Funnily enough I was only thinking to myself yesterday how many more cars have Z in the numberplate now. In my road I counted 8 cars amongst my neighbours all with a Z in the last 3 digits, out of 17 cars I could count at the time!

Yes, I certainly had a Z in the plate of a 54 plate car I had.

I have noticed this too, and my thought is that if they use up all the Z combinations, it leaves the more desirable letter combos to be sold on as "cherised" registrations.

Current registrations only have two letters at the beginning, the region identifier.

Last three letters are randomly generated.

Yea three letters and numbers after. We get all our cars changed from English plates over here because Northern Irish plates look better :P

Mine has a Z in it and was registered in London, it is a random number.

xxZ nnnn = ni plate z not used i nthe prefix or suffix series of UK plates


current series - ll nn xxx = z can appear in any of the x places but not in the l places

I've had a few cars with Z in the random bit at the end (newer style plates). Just counting off the top of my head, I've had 3 cars with Zs in their plates (ZPP, ZCX, ZKP). Just to round it off, my mum's old car was UUZ and my sister's current car is MZV. All of the Zs.
