Nissan x Trail auto handbrake

Hi
Has anyone had a problem with Nissan x trail's auto handbrake not always applying itself.

I have read in the manual when you park and remove the key from the ignition it should automatically apply. The manual also does state that if the brake has been used frequently over a short period the brake may not operate in order to prevent the system overheating. This has not been my experience.
