Getting caught up in a flood whilst driving - how?
Discussion
Totally agree, complete muppets!
One wonders how people this stupid can pass a driving test in the first place?
If you look at the picture carefully the water level below the guardrail/pavement edge is fairly consistent but of course the road surface drops away down towards the bridge (for obvious reasons). Maybe people used that as a guide before they went paddling

No doubt there will be someone along in a minute to defend their stupid behaviour, but in the meantime my money is on the Darwin Award candidates

People massively underestimate how powerful moving water is, so have a go, with entirely predictable results.
A foot of moving water can move a car, 6 inches enough to take you off your feet, if it's moving quick enough.
A combination of that and foolishness (viz the blue Zafira yesterday in Wallington) and you've got floods full of cars, which in turn makes it more difficult when we have to put boats into the water, submerged cars are a real hazard, particularly at night.

Just seen a video of a Zafira taking the plunge in this location. Apparently it happens a lot, so you'd think they'd close the road completely when it floods?
Pretty sure this is the second time it's happened in that spot in around about 5 years. We lived there the last time it did. There are signs under the bridge warning people it's prone to flooding, along with a measure to show how deep the water is.
People are dumb.
Only excuse in my mind is if you've never driven that road before and you didn't notice the signs. Though all the other cars turning around ought to have been a bit of a hint...

This happened in such a short space of time, I was about 10 miles away from that and we had less than an hour of very heavy rain, whereas the last few days have been gorgeous weather. So basically, people are idiots, and drive in despite warnings not to, because its more important to get through than it is to consider going a different way, becuase hey, that would be a massive inconvenience

At least it won't catch fire nowThere's a spot in Tindale Crescent in Bishop Auckland that's nearly identical and you can guarantee that this'll happen when it floods (albeit only one car usually and they don't have the excuse of the raise pedestrian walkway either). It'll be very much a case of 'nah, I can get through that!' and next thing they know they're bobbing along like an ornamental duck nesting box.
That underpass is about 15 minutes from where I live and it's flooded like that on more than one occasion.
People get caught out in it because they're stupid and rather than turn around and go another way think, "I'll be fine" when unless you're a total stranger to the area it's obvious that water is 5-6ft deep.
There was a load of flooding round the area and I've no doubt plenty of people having a go at driving through water that was far too deep for their cars. They'd shut a road off locally to me and said you can try and drive through but totally at your own risk. I turned round and chose another route.

Indeed. Looks like a taxi, so that's plausible if he's off his usual patch.Still, you'd have to be a special kind of retarded to go full bore into something without knowing exactly how deep it was.
