I'm assuming they'd just use this nowadays. There used to be a website where you needed either the V5 reference no. or latest MOT reference no and it would show who did the MOT, have they done away with this?

This is the main reason I use it.It's alarming to see the amount of cars who have miles listed at like 60-80,000 but in reality the last 2 or 3 MOT's have shown 120,000+ miles.
In my search for a new merc I found at least 8 or 9 had questionable / concerning differences between the advertised miles and the miles actually recorded on the last few MOT's. I didn't realise clocking was as bad as this.

It's a great tool and one that I used on my Daihatsu s
tbox. Most cars will eat CV joints/bushes at 3-5 years old for example. If it failed on that then it's good to see that it was passed a day later and you are more confident it has been repaired - look under the car and you should see a new set of CV boots.
One car I looked at had continual fails every year with lighting issues that convinced me it wasn't the bulbs.

yes its great isn't it. I have saved literally thousands by not spending money I cannot afford on cars I want. Its the voice of reason. The antithesis of man maths. Come to think of it, I hate it. It should be bannedfivepointnine said:

Not just about the owners. For three years my Riley was taken for its MOT when it received its annual service and for three years it passed. Year four it failed due to 'advanced rust close to suspension mountings'. Why? Because the old MOT inspector had retired and his replacement was much more diligent with his probing and had unearthed serious corrosion that the old boy had overlooked.Hopefully we will at some point have the same database showing service history too all invoices and works carried out all logged online along with MOTs.
Would take away all questionable services or "service history in the post honest" yet it never appears.
This too will weed out all the crap / stop rogue sellers trying to rip off buyers

They all go back to the introduction of computerised testing. Every pass, every fail, every advisory that's ever been logged on a computer.Unless there's been a plate change. That breaks things.
Not so sure about your comment on plate changes breaking things because I put a private reg on one of my cars and the MOT history is still displayed correctly for many past years, along will all the advisories and pass/fail results. Is actually very impressive to see this information become readily available.

I use it all the time when looking at cars on eBay now, infact I immediately avoid cars where the number plate is obscured. It is fantastic for spotting the looked after cars that pass year after year compared to the ones that fail and then scrape a pass with a selection of advisories.
Best I found was a 2001 Audi A4 1.9 Tdi with 70k miles on the clock that had never had a single advisory. Worst are Renault Scenics which often badly fail their first MOTs and then have their mileage reset to zero when they have a new dash fitted. Do you think the sellers say it has had a new dash or advertise the false mileage......
Toyota Prius seem to only really fail on tyres and brakes, even the stupidly high mileage ones.

That info is being used to DVLA to notify certain owners their vehicles have been clocked, I have heard it first hand & know of others recently.
However this one will be hard to beat! A customer of my wife were notified by DVLA that their newly built £30k horsebox (on a 5 year old Boxer chassis) had been clocked, from 290,000 back to 70,000. They have just had another one (legit miles) built & delivered by the same guilty suppliers in the Ascot area.
