We all know that the golf r, leon cupra 290 and s3 have very similar engines and therefore top speeds. We also know that are limited to 155mph and we also know that the actual indicated top speed is more like 165mph.

However what confused me today was not just the difference between the top speed on the dials, golf 200mph, cupra 180mph and S3 160mph because it's accepted that manufacturers do over egg the dials sometimes to make them appear quicker than they actually are, but in the case of the Audi, it's quite the opposite.

Can anyone offer a reason why Audi would top the dials out below the speed the car can do?

Reminds me of the saxo vts, dials said 140mph but the car would go off the clocks in standard form.

Bizarre when it's the same manufacturer ie VAG.

Saxo vts only did 127mph though. Must have been a good downhill stretch!

I think you'd die of boredom or old age before you got any of those three up to a verified 165 that last few mph would be slow

As for the reason of the Audi speedo

They don't state the car can do 160 so the dials are correct for their purpose
