Evening lads, Im running a really shonky old rover 825 diesel at the minute with the VM Motori 2.5td engine.

It seems very coarse but drives fine not losing any oil, coolant etc etc. Its just clattery.

Also doesnt seem to like being run on low fuel.. Im going to go whack half a tank of derv in and should i stick some redex in does it work?

Going to do oil and filter at the weekend ive got 20 litres of 15w40 lying about presume this will suffice?

Guess if the oil is full of swarf ill know, Redex though lads yay or nay?

Regards thumbup

Redex is good for reducing emissions, but i don't think it fixes anything. I used stick some in before MOTs as routine, but couldn't really notice any difference.

It used to be so common. it loosened carbon deposits which would then exit via the exhaust on A long run.Do any of you scientists out here ( lots of bright folk are PHs, some even PHDs.) actually know what is IS?

Hi.

I'm a resident pistonheads scientist researchist and can confirm it does remove all the st from your engine.

Good day. Safe driving.

I use millers and v power - few tanks of that combo can do wonders provided you're not driving short distances

My experience is that it kills diesel injectors. Better and safer not to use it.

Only empirical evidence I have is not very empirical.

I had a car that I was concerned about, emissions wise. I dropped in a bottle of Redex and gave it an Italian tune-up for 50 miles on the way to the MOT. It passed with a near-perfect emissions score (previous MOT was close to tolerances) but that could have been the ragging I gave it before the MOT.

Either way, it didn't do any harm.

Shop around, sometimes Halfords have it on offer.

As an aside I tried running a lawnmower on neat Redex once, I honestly thought it was going to blow up and ran for cover until it drained the tank. Still works, but I won't try it again.

My other car which is garaged and untouched for half of the year for at least past 5years runs just terrible once the winter ends and I bring it outside and start it up.. that is untill I put in half a bottle of the redex in higher concentration than it's said and run it for around 200km- works just fine after that.. Tried looking for faults on the car, dismantled/cleaned half of its engine...nothing helped.. I thought that redex was snake oil as well but it was my last resort and just tried it for the heck of it-the only thing that car bring my car back after long winter sleeps.

Millers EcoMax is far superior in my experience, for both petrols and diesels. It's something you can add every fill up, and will quieten the engine (diesel) as well as clean injectors, cylinders etc. Whereas Redex wants you to dump in half a bottle at a time, Millers only needs 1ml per 1 litre of fuel, so a bottle lasts about 10 tanks. It really is cracking stuff, which has detergents, anti-corrosives and various other goodies. It means you can run on the cheapest supermarket fuel you can find, yet be content knowing your engine is still getting top of the range detergents and additives. It will raise cetane for diesel fuel and add a whole 2 RON (i.e. 97 to 99) for petrol, which is a bonus. Anecdotally the vast majority of online reviews also rave about extra fuel economy and low down grunt, and I've always found that to be true. A double dose (2ml / litre) followed by a good Italian tune up before an MOT will always see you right unless something is already very broken.

That engine was always dog rough, but quite quick for a diesel of that generation. I think the later versions (96 on?) were drive by wire and I seem to recall they weren't quite so noisy. You could try running a few tanks of Shell VPower+ through it for a similar effect, but I think you might just have to accept that it's noisy biggrin

Keep an eye on the coolant level as they do suffer from HGF and cracking heads.

Very much this. I've had a history of running snotty old diesels (A4 1.9tdi, BMW 325tds, Saab 2.2tid...) every single one of them ran smoother and quieter running Millars EcoMax. Mpg increase was negligible, but power was perkier, no flat spots.
I swear by the stuff, it really is good.

Redex, my that brought back memories. It was referred to as 'shot' which you asked for when the attendant asked how much petrol you wanted. The answer may well be "6 gallons & 6 shot". When I worked part-time at a filling station I was encouraged to suggest Redex every time as an 'add-on' sale. When the boss was not looking I topped up my own car with lots of 'shot'.
Another trick was to remove the air cleaners & trickle Redex into the carburettor(s)ostensibly to burn off cylinder head deposits. Doing this was great fun because huge clouds of blue smoke would come out the exhaust.
And no I was not aware it made any difference at all.
