Rolls Royce Cullinan spy images

First look at the Rolls-Royce 4x4, and are they suicide doors?

Now we all know the procedure with new car test mules: keep the final details covered up for as long as possible (and the testing as secret as possible), to ensure some surprise when the car makes its official debut. Some go to bizarre lengths to ensure that happens - see the early Alfa Stelvio prototypes - but it isn't always successful.

Take a look at these first Rolls-Royce Cullinan images. It was spotted autobahn testing with a Range Rover Autobiography but that's not actually the big news here. Take a look instead at the B-pillar, in fact exactly next to the driver's door handle. See it? It's the rear door handle, very strongly suggesting the Cullinan will have suicide doors like a Phantom or a Ghost. Oh sure, there are handles tacked on in the conventional place also, but they look far less convincing than those further forward. Could be interesting...

In addition to the official images shown by Rolls Royce recently, these new pictures reveal a pretty boxy silhouette; this is certainly an off-roader in the Range Rover and Bentayga style, rather than something more coupe-like. Even without any other traffic around, it looks absolutely gigantic as well. Surely those wheels have to be at least 21-inches in diameter and hardly look imposing there. As for the design at the back of the car, let's just say only the exhaust tips appear close to production ready so far.

As declared by Rolls Royce with the other images, the Cullinan will now be on a global testing tour to ensure it can cope in all conditions. So expect many more snaps like this before the full 2018 debut!

Can't blame them for hopping on the SUV bandwagon.
In doing so, this has to be the best looking RR at the mo'

"and are they suicide doors?"

Presumably in place for when the first owner gets a trade in value after a year.

Can we assume a retail price of over 250k?

I can't help but think that finally the large Rolls' have finally adopted a body style that will suit their grand sizes. I suspect the SUV style will suit the proportions and cues of their styling. I can see the purpose of their "saloons" in the sense of luxury, decadence and opulence, however to me they were just like the old American cars, gigantic... From where the market currently is, they're rightly (IMO) following Bentley and producing the car they should have made 10 years ago. One can only hope at some point RR get the CFRP from BMW to slash the weight drastically.

surely if they were serious about secrecy they wouldn't have the trademark lights and grille so obviously in place.
you could easily put another model's lights and a 3d printed grille of a different design but similar cooling qualities to the palladian style production item.

So marketing want everyone to talk about it so they drop large hints, but the engineers are told to keep it secret. Hmmm

Is this a newly developed platform or is it an extended BMW X5 jobbie?

This Car is on the new Alumimium Architecture that will be used for ALL future RR Products.
It'll help enormously.

Compare the weight of (Aluminium) EWB Phantom to a (steel) Dawn, for example... smile

New Aluminium RR Product Architecture - X5 is Steel, so could scarcely be less related to an X5

That's great! Though, without looking up the two vehicles weight, I'd hazard a guess, both being large cars, they're on the wrong side of two tonnes? Aluminium of course helps, but I'm curious what a carbon body structure could do to cut weight further. I'm not entirely convinced the customers would bother with the increased price.

Looks like a Range Rover with a different grille and suicide doors.

I guess if you're going to copy somebody that's a good choice but this could just as easily be JLR testing the next full-size Range Rover with a fake grille as the Cullinan for all the difference in styling a this point.

We can and should blame them for getting on the SUV bandwagon.

Apart from the doors, the profile really does look like a supersized Range Rover.

I did not think BMW had a platform big enough for this pimped up Escalade. The 7 series might be long enough but not nearly beefy enough. The X5 and 6, too small.
Cannot imagine they would use a bespoke platform, much to pricey. So if it is some kind of welding job then difficult to imagine it will be any good.

Pointless, exercise in over indulgence.

Yes, I'm sure the boffins at BMW and RR don't know their target audience and sales provisions as well as you!

I can't say I will like it, but it totally makes sense for RR. Arguably, they're the people who should be doing cars like this the most.
