My E36 328i just failed it's MOT as there are no side indicator repeater lights. [The two which are on the side front fenders from factory].

The previous owner removed them and welded the hole up before giving the car a respray.

Any idea on how I can fit something to get it through a MOT?

Get drilling, chap.

Surface mounted ones with a cable running to the front indicators will look utterly crap.

If you stand at the rear of the car (maybe a foot or so off the rear quarter), can you see the front indicators flashing ?

Somewhere that'll ignore the fact that not having them is a Reason for Rejection, y'mean?

Fit E36 M3 mirrors with the indicators - sounds like the car has been "max powered" anyway so will blend in.

You don't *have* to have them as long as enough of the front indicator is visible from the side -

I don't know if that's the case for an E36 though.

Don't see what the problem is. They'll never be used anyway.

Not sure if this would cover clause 1.4 above but - Could you buy aftermarket wing mirrors which integrate the indicator in to the mirror housing? I have seen them for the E36 (not sure if they ever came like that standard). Although not the cheapest or quickest method; if you don't want to drill holes it may be an option.

Edited: Missed the reply above (M3 mirrors would at least look factory).

It's pretty clear that as your E36 will be post 1986 it will either need a side repeater or you can see the front direction indicator from the side, which you presumably can.

Had your side repeater been fitted, and wasn't working, it's a fail. But not having a side repeater shouldn't be a fail if you can see the front indicator from the side.

Easily solved as my defender had this issue, even though guy wouldn't accept that it didn't have them from factory, but he argued date of registration.

What you need to do is
1. Buy some cheap side repeaters off any car, make sure they have wires still attached.
2. Find your indicator wires, splice into them and lengthen the new wires to reach your mirrors.
3. Solder them together then run then out the top of the bonnet and cable tie them to your mirrors.

There's no height regulations either on then, i had I've higher than the other still passed the MOT, though tester was annoyed what i did.

Then after not, cut cable ties and pop then into your inner wings for next year

It won't be - else they wouldn't have fitted side repeaters, given that the home market didn't get them from the start. BMW UK clearly felt that they were needed to satisfy UK market regs.

Not necessarily. It would have been cheaper for manufacturers to fit side repeaters to every vehicle than make specific market versions - some with, some without. Most modern cars have front indicators you can clearly see from the side.

That's my point. German ones didn't always have 'em. UK ones did.

Sorry, I meant, yes, once upon a time, some markets had them. Then eventually there was a point at which it was cheaper to fit them to all markets regardless of local legislation.

Perhaps, perhaps not - but if they explicitly needed side repeaters before that point came, we can take it as read that the front indicators don't meet the wrap-around regs (very few do), so Mr MOT needs side repeaters.
