We have a VW Up which is owned by my wife but is insured and used by my 19 year old daughter with 1 year NCD coming up at renewal next month. So far pretty simple I think...but we have daughter number 2 who is hopefully going to pass her test next month or soon after if she happens to need another go.

Is it possible/sensible to have the newest driver as a named driver on this policy when she passes as the current insurer won't accept named drivers under 21?

This must be a common situation within families where two young drivers effectively share a car but any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Isn't it just whoever will be using it most should be listed as the main driver? otherwise could it effectively a (quite crappy) version of fronting?

Yes, you just need to find an insurer who will cover a 19 year old policyholder with a 17 year old additional driver. Internet comparison sites will give you the options, but it won't be cheap.

She could always get her own policy on the car instead of being a named driver...?

I didn't think that they could each have a policy on the same car but maybe I'm wrong?

The thing is that the two girls will probably have very similar usage of the car.

Thanks

Someone eminently more qualified will give you a definitive answer but I'm under the impression that two people can both insure a single car with their own seperate policies.

As long as any claim is only made via one of those policies then it's fine.

As far as I know, it is possible to have two policies on one car, as someone has already mentioned.

The girlfriend and I share the use of a '72 Fiat 500 and upon calling to add her to my policy on the car I was told that they would not accept any named drivers under 25. I asked to cancel the policy if that were the case and the helpful lady on the phone came back and said they will accept her as a named driver on this occasion. This is on classic car cover though, if that makes any difference.

Personally, I would take out two policies to allow both to build up some NCB thumbup

Thread resurrection apologies.

I'm now in the same situation as the OP, with 20yr old owning and insuring his own car and 17yr old sib just passed his driving test.

I'm not keen to buy another car and would prefer to insure 17yr old to drive his brother's car.

He needs to build up NCB as well.

Can this be done?

See the quoted post below - it would mean both drivers could be their NCB. Perhaps two lots of costs, but if their paying for it on their own and are happy to do so because they'll be building up their NCBs? But, check this can actually be done - I'm not 100% sure either, as I've never been in this position.

Thanks.

Mods - maybe this would be better in SP&L?

The law is the policyholder needs to be doing the majority of the driving. Otherwise, its up the restrictions of the particular insure when it comes to age/experience of named drivers.

I've got two mates - identical twins (and they really are, but sadly they're blokes) - and they drive each others cars and bikes. Neither is named, but you'd never know.
