I don't know whether to turn this into a rant or not! rolleyes

I've been looking for a nice E46 M3 for a while, to have as a bit of a garage queen, and last night, found the perfect car.

Now being 41, and having had 8 M3s amongst other performance cars over the many years I have been driving, I thought calling the insurers this morning to get a renewal quote would have been a formality! Oh no!

"What was the accident you had February 2016?", they asked. "Oh, that was non fault", I replied.

My neighbour chapped me up one morning, to say that he'd bumped my car, with his motor home. He left the handbrake off the ! Because the motorhome had one of those storage boxes hanging off the back of it, he damaged my bonnet, and lightly marked the top of the grill. Due to cost, around £1700 if I remember rightly mad it went through his insurance................

(Rant mode on) fking £2400 to insure a £14k, 2006 bd E46 M3! Because this next door can't fking drive, the useless bd!!! I was in my fking bed, sleeping off a of a hangover, and this prick bumped my car, and I'm getting raped in the wallet for it!! I was paying £450 back in 2003 when I bought my first E46 for £30k, and the s are now trying to charge me 5 times as much, for some useless s incompetence!!!

I'm a statistic! fk me, I'd need to be like alone like Will fking Smith in that movie 'I Am Legend' not to be at risk!! fk fk fk!!!

The next door's insurance, the lying s, told me that I should not be affected, and my premium wouldn't go up! fking bullst!!!!! madmadmadmadmad

I've managed to calm down a little, as I have managed to get it down to £1470!! fking s!

What the fk would they be looking for if I'd written a couple of cars off!?? s! (Rant mode off, how'd I do!??)

They're rendering me uninsurable, as there's no way I'm paying around £120 a month for insurance on a car I'm gonna bring out on sunny Sundays.

Anyway, it's the annual golf day out with the work tomorrow, so at least that's something to look forward to!

How much is a bus pass these days??? biggrin

How much was the insurance before the accident?

Sounds like a simple case of your current insurers not wanting to cover that particular car.

Have you tried other companies? Comparison sites would be the first port of call.

I rate your rant as overindulgent and slightly disingenuous - 3/10

Should have used the time writing that to ring up for more quotes, non-fault claims should not add much to insurance.

I'll need to brush up on my rant technique! biggrin

I've spent all afternoon calling around. The best I can get is £1470. My last(3 years ago) M3 was a 2009 E93, valued at £25k, and I was paying £407 for that. It doesn't help that the young team are getting into the £6/7k M3s now, so risk will be higher, so there'll be an element of that involved.

I genuinely never expected the hike for a non-fault to be honest, it came as a shock! Especially the first quote of £2400.

I was in a similar situation about 8 years ago, when a catering van bumped my unoccupied car outside my old place of work. Again, the justification for the hike was that I was a statistic!!!

Its a problem, even with protected NCB they can still alter the gross premium. It should be the case where there is a full recovery made that there is no increase other than an industry wide increase.

Remember the days when insurance costs actually could reduce?

Same, my E39 530i was hit in a car park whilst unattended, and due to its utter tankness (sp?) it was undamaged, but caused £250 damage to the other car. Result was a 30% increase in my premiums.

You're putting far far too much weight in the value of the car in the risk (quote). Remember a huge part of the cost to your insurer is the person you hit and their valid or not personal injury claim.

Oh and a smallish bump in a £25k and £10k E46 M3 will cost the same to them...

Have you actually tried alternative insurers?

Oh and I'd put money on an E46 M3 being a high insurance risk since they are now bought by scrotes and crashed...(bet if you got an E92 quote it would be A LOT less).

I have a fault claim (50:50 officially) on my E92 but I pay £550 at 29yo...

Making a habit of this aren't you? Statistically you are a disaster area. I wouldn't insure you hehe

If you're in an accident, fault or no-fault, the statistics tell the insurance company that you are more likely to be involved in another accident and as such your risk profile increases which results in a higher premium.

It really should be the case that something like this - your parked car being hit by someone else, it being entirely their fault, and paid for by them or their insurers - doesn't count as declarable.

"What was the accident you had in February 2016?"
"I didn't."
"It says here a claim was made for damage to your car."
"Not by me."

He hasn't cost his insurers a penny, or shown a predilection for activities that would. Bluntly, what's it to them?

My friend's Audi got bummed to death by a Transit when he was at the back of a motorway queue, and he's seen a hit on his premiums thanks to that, even though it's the other guy's fault, the other insurance company's money, and there's absolutely fk-all he could do to avoid it happening again.

It's ridiculous.

Statistics can say whatever you want them to. Which is usually "give us more money".

Why not say he's got a history of only being hit by people who admit it and pay up, and as such statistically has a lower risk profile when set against the number of hit-and-run or not-leaving-a-note incidents?

Statistically you park next / near to dozy muggins who steers his larger than average slab of metal with a rudder.

By that rationale you are more of a risk than Dave. Who is the same age as you, drives the same car, but all his neighbours own econoboxes with Eurocarparts at ten a penny.

It's not you per say. It's your total situation.
^^^This. You live next door to an idiot with a large vehicle. That makes you a higher risk than your twin brother. Think yourself lucky he didn't demolish your garden wall. Then your house insurers would know you were a higher risk too. But so far, as you haven't had a non fault house claim, they're still in the dark.

Yeah I get that, as per my other post. I also mentioned that I understand the risk with the E46 now that it is obtainable by the scrotes. Ironically, I have been looking at the F80 M3, the E46 has been on my list as a keeper/garage queen, so asked for a quote out of curiosity as this is next for me, and it was nigh on the same price, for a 2014 £35k car. So inadvertently, the value does come in to it, when it's out of reach of the scrotes. wink

Harsh, I thought solid 7/10 myself. Good amount of swearing but got his point across in the process.

I completely feel your pain OP, non fault "accident" meant I've been paying way over the odds for the last three years. The system sucks.
