Hi all,

I went to look at a car over the weekend, the advert said 92,000 miles.
I check the MOT history website, and it says the car has 140,000 miles.

So I ask the seller, has the car had a replacement speedometer?

He replies no, so I ask him why MOT website saysc140,000 .

He said it was recorded in km's, instead of miles.

Is it possible to get a replacement MOT miles figure put in, or is that vehicle stuck with them "miles " ?

Stuck. It's a niggle you don't want. Walk away from the deal and wait on the right car

I bought a 95K van a few weeks ago cheap because of mileage. Oh how I smiled when I found out it was KM. A few presses of stereo buttons and it read 59k miles.

Do you think it is possible to have it corrected on theMOT history website, ?

Or perhaps just screw the price down, or walk ?

There's a window of a few days after the test when the speedo reading on the certificate can be changed by the MOT tester. The certificate does state for the recipient to check that all the details are correct, of course no one does and it all ends up being the testers fault when it's too late.

As long as the service history reflects the correct mileage and services at the correct intervals and you have invoices to back this up, and you have checked the previous MOT history which shows all ok apart from the last reading, and an HPi check shows all ok, I wouldn't worry.

It will be corrected at next years MOT and will be pretty obvious, if all else is ok, that it was an inputting error.

On the other hand it might have been clocked to show more mileage than the car has actually done so tread carefully.

Why would anyone do that?

Ah! I see! 'Whoosh's' are usually reserved for when someone has misunderstood an amusing comment though.

its a pain in backside that mistakes cannot be corrected. I have a car which looks very odd on the MOT's

It Goes:

53,000
610,000
77,000

Clearly the 610,000 should be 61,000, especially as I bought it from a retired couple at 66k miles and it was pretty much immaculate.

You are probably right there.

I was pointing out to the OP that basically nobody is stupid enough to add mileage so it is almost certainly an inputting error by the MOT station so nothing to worry about if everything else adds up. As usual though you get the gloom and doom merchants who see everything as a conspiracy.

If it's a good car I see no problem regarding a piece of misinformation.

Not sure, if I were buying, I would be suspicious that the car my have done 557k miles in a year then was rolled back by an unscrupulous owner...

In all seriousness, the problem is more when it is not obvious i.e. rolling back from 130k km to 80k miles when that looks like it could be a genuine clock job.

You can actually specify 'KM' or 'Miles' when putting the figure into the MOT system.

I haven't ever tested a car that has a reading in KM though to see whether it actually changes the wording on the certificate or the history site.

Give how high quality the testing system is, it wouldn't surprise me if choosing KM did the grand total of sod all....

Reviving this thread as it came up in a Google search when I was looking for answers, so might as well post what I found elsewhere.

You have a window of 28 days in which the MOT station can correct their mistake.

After that, you're contacting the DVSA and providing proof. Good luck.

Link with information here: https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/correcting-mot-certificate-mistakes

Here's my MOT information showing km instead of miles (I have a Japanese import that was 'chipped' by the dealer to have the speedo and odometer show miles, so is confusing for the MOT testers. Next MOT I'll pop a Post-It on the dash to help them):

Appears that the poster attempted to post it as a hotlink hidden behind text, but instead placed the PH forum link behind the actual weblink text instead wobble

In any case, the direct / clickable link should be - https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/correcting-mot-c...
