Right. The salesman thread in my opinion has worked really well and seems like it's helping the bad press dealers always get on here... So I thought i'd try with the hire side of the industry.

I'm not sure how this will go but i'm more than willing to try and answer any questions you may have.
If not, this thread will just fizzle out into the cobwebs of the interweb.

I'll answer one question that seems to pop up in any thread about car hire businesses before it comes up. We aren't criminals and we don't use the company as a front to clean money. wink

As a rough % how many people hire your cars and look after them and are "good" customers, how many are utter idiots which cause you to raise prices for everyone to cover their misadventures. I'd love to hire a supercar from item to time but the price just puts me off and I assume it's to deal with numptys who think their talent is beyond their IQ

£8k excess is our highest. Not something we ever want to be doing.

As a percentage, i'd say 85% are really good clients. Most of our sales comes from previous customers/referrals so you know (hope) they will look after it.
We get a lot of people who really look after them and don't even get a single speeding alert from them.
Sadly we do get a lot of idiots enquiring but over the years, we've just decided it's just not worth the risk.

We give them 100 miles per day of hire but the majority of hirers don't exceed that. We occasionally get someone who will do 20 miles more but I reckon it's probably less than 1% who do a lot more than we give them.

It's all about the miles expected on these cars so most customers tend to work out what they think they'll do as a max and work towards that.

I take it by this quote you have live tracking on them?

Go on then, what's the fastest speed you've had an alert for and what car was it.

It would be very interesting to see the live telemetry remotely. Speed, revs, gear, g force, etc.

What do you expect your customers to do with the cars? I mean, if someone is hiring a Ferrari, do you expect them to 'test' the performance. Or is it all about just being seen in one?

I have rented prestige cars twice. Each time the hirer wants £hundreds/thousands for stone chips etc.
Never seem to be possible to not lose a chunk of the excess.

What's the typical ute for your fleet? And how do you work out holding costs on something so specialist?

Porsche & Maserati, are the highest we deal with - but we have got AMG and Range Rover terms so do the supercar manufacturers give the same sort of rental deals as the mainstream suppliers?

£35k to hire a Bugatti Veyron for the weekend. Silly, silly terms and conditions but the guy was very well off and only wanted to pose in London for his birthday.

Yes we have live tracking on all cars. They show real time speed, g forces, location and a few other bits of info. Can't see how you can hire a car out without this.

Most of our hirers want them for a special occasion (birthdays/weddings etc) and we also have a lot of customers who live in different countries and hire a car from us whenever they're here. We have one guy from the UAE who comes over circa 6 times a year. We do also get a lot of people who for some reason just want to hire it to show off and head straight into London confused

Regarding loss of excess etc, we don't charge for stone chips (unless it's like they've done rally course). Bumper scuffs and alloys are the most common but we only charged a small amount, not the full excess.

sorry S11Steve, i'm not quite sure what you mean?

The restriction on how hard you can 'rag' it is just don't. We expect people to have a bit of fun but in our T&C's we include aspects of driving that are not allowed. You'll actually be amazed at how few people actually rent one to try and drive it at anywhere near the limits.
Sure we get the odd few who like to go a bit above the speed limit but we have very simple warnings in place and if you continue to do it, we will shut the car down so it can't be restarted and recover it meaning you lose your deposit/excess.

This is hard on this forum without multi quote. Haha

MYOB - we're looking for a delivery driver but apart from that, no. (unless you want a full time job valeting the cars here for very little money?

Define 'rag'.

If I hired a car and you got a notification I had hit say 120 mph (very easy to do in all your cars I would assume) would you shut it down?

Hmm thanks for being so frank Rich12, especially that last answer. I get from a business point of view it makes 100% sense to ensure people aren't being idiots with your cars BUT from a customer perspective, I just don't see the appeal of hiring a supercar to pootle around at 30 miles an hour.

I get for a lot of people, being seen in one might be the big draw but for those who aren't interested in showing off, having such strict limits would be a big turn off, at least it would be for me.

Even supercar track day events have limits so for people who can't afford to buy a proper supercar but who want to experience the visceral thrill of driving one, there just doesn't seem to be a decent proposition unless you have nice rich mates who are willing to let you drive theirs.
