Had a wee search and through the millions of tyre discussions there doesn't seem to be one version of the truth so to speak. What would everyone think of a single thread where people would come to leave their experience with tyres. Budget/Mid range/premium, doesn't matter. Just would be handy with so many makes about.

If there is one can I have a link to it?

If there's not, might be good to start it below. Maybe make it a sticky thread?

Will be a waste of space as 90% of reviews will be from people who haven't got the first clue about tyre performance and tyres characteristics.

you will get lots of posts saying how good or bad their particular tyres are but with little or no experience of other tyres on that car to give a valid comparison.

Put some new Michelins on once, spun into a bridge and wrote the car off in a bit of drizzle. Avoid like the plague.

The wife has Fullruns on her Aygo and never had smash since, so full marks to them.

Blimey they are making it hard for people to pass! I would risk it, you can only lose the cost of the test.

I passed in 1987 I had no idea it was so awkward now.

It’s not a bad idea, but the problem you’ve got is:

  • most of us are just faceless posts on the internet. While I do exist (I think), and various of the barge people have met me (& eaten my quality street), I’m just one voice, who has experience of a few tyres at a time, on two, rare-ish cars. Everyone’s got an opinion, right or wrong.
  • the winter tyres thread - would you like the full argument or the 5minute one? laugh
  • the ‘Davanti’ tyres thread - oh dear...
Finally, as justification of subjectiveness - I tend to buy Michelin tyres, I’ve been impressed by them over the years. I’ve driven all sorts of tyres though, and 99.99%of the time, have no issues. Only once in 20+ years (just back in November) have I ever thought a set of tyres dangerous, and they came on the car I’d just bought. However, the ‘issue’ only became apparent above 80mph - so if you only ever drove in this country, you couldn’t legally feel this issue (on the public highway). They’d be great for a car control day though (so I’ve kept them)!

Also tyres behave differently when used on different cars.

Budget Chinese tyres maybe quite decent on a daily hack.

Might be the death of you on something rwd and sporty.

Hi

I have a BMW 330i. Recently replaced my rear tyres with Pirelli P7 Cinturatos. The grip they offer compared to the old tyres is great. Wet weather performance is superior and for a run flat they are comfy. They seem to be giving better mpg too. So I highly rate them.

Now the reality,

I replaced the worn, knackered Pirelli P7 Cinturatos with new Pirelli P7 Cinturatos. The old tyres were at the legal limit and I hadn't bothered to check the pressures for a few months.

I find tyre reviews from personal experience to be a bit woolly. I only really trust back-to-back tyre reviews on the same type of car, to truly get a comparison.

Just my 2p.

Mike

Just to try and be useful on this topic (all from memory and subjective):

Current on the 3 series
Michelin Pilot Sport 4: great grip and impressive traction, good wet weather and cold performance. But noisy, not as good on fuel as other and rears have worn quite quickly. Very happy with these.

Current on the MiTo (155hp)
Michelin Premacy: decent grip and traction for the price, reasonable wet and cold weather performance. Noise and wear seem average.

Previous:
Goodyear Asymmetric Eagle F1 2: good grip, good traction, great fuel economy, loud and wore quickly.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport: very similar to the PS4, but not as good in the wet or cold.

Accelera: terrible traction, grip seemed OK, noise was bad.

Cooper Zeon have been OK, last forever but offer less traction than I would like. No grip issues, wet performance could be better. Good midrange option.

Many other ones that I can't remember though, wife got some horrid ditch finders on the Alfa that were scary in the wet, they were swiftly dispatched much to her disdain. Wish I could remember the brand.

Cayenne S running on Vredestein Vortis as a summer tyre. Absolutely awesome, wet weather grip & resistance to aquaplaning is 100%. Great in the dry as well. Dunlop winters good as well.

I have uniroyal rain sports xl on all four corners of my Fez ST and had them on the front of my old CTR. Very good tyre in the dry and superb in the wet. Pretty good in the snow to boot.

Much better than the Bridgestones I used to run they were poor in the cold and useless in the snow.

thing is a lot of people change their tyres when they get to 2mm or so, and then they compare a new tyre with full tread to their old tyre with low tread, and think wow these EVENTS are awesome in the wet, my old michelins were dangerous!
