V5 without owner signing (abandoned car)
Discussion
(Being vauge for obvious reasons)
Somewhere there is a big old abandoned farm, and there are a few cars on site. One was rather interesting as it was an early 70s one.... anyway, the owner is very old now and hasn’t been there since the late 90s and he has other properties and they are all derelict and he’s got dementia and doesn’t really care about any of them
Anyway. Not too long ago one of the cars went missing. I’ve now found a guy who has said that he managed to get it and get it legally. I don’t know what he did, but I have always had my eye on the other car there. What’s the deal with this kind of stuff? I read somewhere that if an owner doesn’t respond to a request from the DVLA that they can reassign the keeper? Any info on this?

At a very high level, that is correct and what I understand.Somewhere there is a big old abandoned farm, and there are a few cars on site. Bearing in mind registered keeper isn't the same as actual owner... depending on the state of affairs, value of cars etc,
If it's a 1988 Ford Sierra I doubt anyone would care.
If it was a 250 GTO LM then perhaps you might get a few knocks at the door in the future..
I know a guy who got an abandoned 944 officially put in his name. It had been in the car park of an apartment building for several years. The block management had tried to contact the owner many times since he was a former resident. After having no luck my friend was asked if he wanted it and it was his if he'd remove it since he had a trailer to recover it. He got a letter from the block management to this effect and they prepared an invoice for the original owner for parking charges far in excess of the car's value. He got a v5 fairly easily. AFAIK the original owner never resurfaced but it was always a risk that he would hence the invoice to hopefully scare him off.
You'd need to know who owns the land and get their permission before this would even start to be right. If you just remove it that is just plain theft.

This is a good point. Not just theft of a car bug tresspassing on somebodys property to get it.(Whats the value of the car ?!)
OP - ask yourself this; if it was a Picasso or a Van Gogh in the barn would you think about taking that and therefore it becomes yours? It is simply theft whether it is a car a painting or a football.
Registered keeper is exactly as it says, just the registered keeper, NOT the legal owner. Also with the owner now having dementia you would have serious trouble even saying that he gave it to you or similar and they legal guardians / estate executors could easily pursue you.
These threads come up every 6 months or so. In simple terms it isn't yours and you can't make it yours by taking it.
