Insurance - WTF?
Discussion
Hi all,
Some more stories of insurance BS coming your way.
I currently drive a fiesta, insured with admiral on black box. I've been doing quotes for various cars as I'm looking to buy something in a couple of months or so. I use confused.com and moneysupermarket for the quotes, mostly confused. So I was getting reasonable quotes from elephant and admiral (around £1300 for a 325i etc) using different details from my current DOB etc so I can pretend I have 2 years NCB which I should get in mid-April. So I was getting some quotes for random cars, now I have stopped getting quotes from them at all and the next prices are well in excess of £2000. I have tried another different DOB, different name etc but I can't get them to appear back on the listings on the price comparison sites. When I go on to the direct sites (elephant/admiral) the prices are stupid again
Any ideas? Is this more admiral group crap?
Thanks

Their algorithm thinks that you're trying to game the system, so it either stops quoting you all together or only spits out ridiculous "we only want your business if you're stupid enough to pay X" prices. Some more stories of insurance BS coming your way.

As you've found, you can fiddle with your details to some extent, but it if you do it too much the algorithm "fails safe" with high prices or refusing to quote at all.

Without going into how good/not good they are as an insurer, as thankfully I've never had to make a claim. I can however say that I've always had a good experience with Admiral when taking out insurance. They usually quote a high price, I call and say I'm not paying that, they tap away at a keyboard and magically reduce the quote by a few hundred quid. Have been doing this for at least 6 years and always end up with a reasonable figure.

I'm not sure I would define that as a good experience
Reminds me of the 'Cancelling Sky' thread which is just full of people reporting the price is through the roof but they've just re-subscribed because Sky have done them the kind of generous gift of charging them the normal rate.
Bizarre.
I've had the same issue as you before. When I was looking for my second car I was running quotes 24/7 😂, I noticed that the cheapest quotes (admiral group companies) would usually disappear outside of their working hours so worth trying again during the day tomorrow as they should reappear.

Its annoying when you actually want to compare the costs of insuring several different vehicles prior to actually buying one, as the cost of insurance will have some bearing on what you buy.
Exactly, at my age it has a 100% bearing. I'm not paying £2000 to insure a car for a year that's ridiculousAbove poster I've tried that already bud but it hasn't changed anything. Changed computer and IP as well and confused.com account
Is it worth getting some further training to possibly reduce the risk and premiums?
I never found having a IAM or RoSPA advanced test reduced my premiums, but that may be different for you. It may help keep you alive and your accident history simpler if the next step up is a 6 cylinder BMW.
