Mk2 Escort: Duratec vs Zetec
Discussion
I've been offered a rotten chassis but with the all important chassis plate and v5 for an RS2000 at a great price.
Retrofitting the 1.8 or 2.0 zetec into anglias and escorts seems a very popular thing just now and, in fact, retroford sell complete conversion kits including crate engines and recon type 9 boxes for a remarkably small amount of money.
I always thought the 2.0 duratec would be a better choice - alloy, chain driven and crate engines arent too expensive - although pricier than a zetec. Why are zetecs so much more popular? i seem to recall the exhaust is the "wrong" side for a mk1 or mk2 escort? Any other reasons? Or is just cost?
Anyone watching Gordon Murrays mk1 escort build on youtube? Cosworth-built dry-sumped duratec 2.0 screamer with roller barrel throttle bodies. I shudder to think what that's going to cost from Cosworth. Almost Millington money maybe.

Cost, mostly.
But also the duratec is quite tall so can be a bit of a squeeze height wise. (see said Gordon Murray youtube thing)
Don't use a type 9, use a mazda mk3 box or a rocket box (if you can find one).
The Duratec is a much better engine and is well supported with lots of people making Throttle body kits etc (see SBD)
Duratec with a rocket box would be my choice.

Interesting, thanks. I was thinking the 6 spd box from an mx5 too.But also the duratec is quite tall so can be a bit of a squeeze height wise. (see said Gordon Murray youtube thing)

The rocket box is a lovely thing though.

Yep, I have first refusal. There's nothing usable on the chassis so it's a start again job. I do wonder about a proper restoration but there are plenty of restored rs2000's around and I really want an escort based fast-road "fun" car.I priced up a new shell, new atlas axles, a crate duratec, a 6-speed box and bellhousing from an mx5, Even before the list is halfway complete it gets expensive!
Interesting that retropower are going for full independent rear suspension on the Murray mk1.
