BBC said:
BMW is extending a UK recall of its cars after the BBC's Watchdog found that vehicles could cut out completely while they are being driven.

It is recalling 312,000 vehicles: the BMW 1 Series, the 3 Series, the Z4 and its X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011.

BMW initially recalled 36,410 petrol cars last year over safety issues.

It said it now recognised there may have been similar problems in cars not covered by the first recall.

The German carmaker initially recalled cars in the UK after Narayan Gurung, who who was travelling with his wife on Christmas Day in 2016, died when their Ford Fiesta crashed into a tree to avoid a broken-down BMW.

The BMW had suffered an electrical fault, causing its brake lights to fail and resulting in the vehicle stalling on a dark A-road.

My friend who’s a BMW technician said this morning that it’s old news and they’ve been carrying out that recall for the last 3 years?

It recently emerged that BMW had failed to tell the UK's Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency about the electrical fault in some of its cars that led to the death of Mr Gurung.
What is going on? How can BMW be blamed for the man crashing his Fiesta?

All of these cars have reflective rear ends right, because of this reason. Accidents happen, how are BMW to blame, and what could they have told the DVSA? scratchchin

I had this problem with my 2007 330i, didn't know what was happening - car would just completely cut out at random occasions. Finally diagnosed by my local indy as a faulty cable to the fuse box and repaired with a replacement part that BMW designed so you didn't have to replace the whole cable. I doubt I'll get a refund.

Yes they do, but so did the lorry with the drunk driver who parked up on the inside lane, and he still got the blame, even though the driver who crashed into him was on the phone. I suppose in this case the BMW's sudden loss of power is the drunk driver!

Sorry, not aimed at yourself for sharing, just at the BBC/media for creating scandals.

Safety recalls are part & parcel of road vehicles. I dare say most vehicles on the road will have had a recall issued for something by the manufacturers. I just find it odd that only some of these select cases end up on the news.

Watchdog... clap

Yup I expect you hit it on the head there,,, was exposed by a BBC program and it's a relatively large number of cars so they'll try to advertise it as much as possible

I think the fact BMW knew about this, were warned but only acted after someone died is worthy of being on the news. It's deplorable.

My car falls into that category (sept 07 335d). Will wait to see if I hear from anyone.

Can’t wait for the thread comparing recall incident death numbers to drunk or speeding driver death numbers.

Each week we have motorcycle deaths here, but they only make local and not national news.

I thought this was an issue way before those dates, I remember my dad had a '98 e39 530D that would cut out at completely random intervals (once on the autobahn doing some fair pace) and you would have to restart the car, BMW could never find the fault. Oh and this wasn't recent with an aging car, the car was new at the time, he had it from 98-01.

Another one hot off the press from the BBC.

Okay, so it's the ASA being pricks this time, but have you seen that advert? Hardly raunchy... BMW must be sick of the UK.

Rather have that than those stupid lifestyle ones advertising qashqais or whatever
