Sorry if this post is elsewhere, new to this.
14 reg qashqai, air con now u/s. Main dealer says needs new condenser, job cost will be £570.
Seems its a new kind of gas? And after looking in forums seems will cost 160 plys for parts, and 250 to gas it afterwards, even if i fit myself.
WTF?
Anyone know if independents can gas it?

Aint no way shelling out 570, when it prob will go again in couple yrs.
Any advice?

R410 is being replaced with r32, so I guess the same things happening within the automotive industry

R1234yf.

A friend is having major issues with a GT86 that uses it.

It'll be the 1234yf stuff. Was very costly a few years ago but it's becoming more prevalent so prices are dropping. Shop around for a regas price after swopping the parts yourself if you want to keep costs down.

£125 for a regas from here..

Oh, and the cheeky dealers charged me £90 to diagnose the problem.
Charging more per hour than barristers.

Didn’t you ask them how much it their hourly rate would be?

Why is it cheeky?

Do you work for free?

Presumably they filled it with dyed gas to confirm where the leak was? The condenser is exposed, and thus vulnerable, stone chips etc so not a warranty job.

Others can fit it, you just need a price. I think I was quoted 400 for the previous (J10) model, assume yours is the later one, not sure if it's the same part. Whoever does it will need to refill, so £90 (or £50 at least) will be the regas.

Whilst not a Qashqai I had a Nissan Juke & dealer told me a similar story.
Got a mobile a/c operative to visit at home who diagnosed a poorly located pipe which he replaced & rerouted & then re-gassed.
About £150 I think - 3 years ago though.
Also Nissan dealer was a useless pain when auto-box failed but Nissan UK got it sorted AND gave the dealer a bking for messing me about.
Was VERY quick to dump Nissan & buy Honda - now there's a brand that knows about service.

Used to - not now. Odd for a brand that's in some difficulty in the UK. It was voted the worst franchise to have by its own dealers.

Is it?

How much should a main dealer charge for an hour of their time?

Where abouts are you? I've used a mobile guy recommended off here for two jobs and he was great. He also does most of the 1234yf jobs for the dealers round here as their machines are only for the older stuff.

You'll probably find the Nissan dealer is subbing it out to a mobile specialist then adding a bit

Gen 2 qashqai has a well known issue with cracking condensers, which have not been caused by stone or any other damage, was on back order for a huge amount of time due to demand for an updated version, I'd escalate this with the service advisor before meekly shelling out for a new one, have a search on the qashqai forums for info.

The cost of the older style gas has gone up recently too, Nissans and Mazdas and some of the newer fords run the new style gas and yes its bloody expensive.
