Selling my car but keeping my private plate (issues)
Discussion
As above,
I have sold my car (taken deposit today and being collected tomorrow)
I have just gone onto the DVLA site to remove the numberplae and it has said
This registration number cannot be retained online
We need to look into your application further due to the vehicle’s licensing history.
Please send a V317 application, and the V5C registration certificate (logbook) to:
DVLA personalised registrations

So I have looked at the V317 form online and it has an option B to retain the numberplate which is what I want to do.
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen...
It states if selling the car to fill in the V5 as normal when selling a car and include this with the form and send to the above address.
Do I just fill section 3 as my details so it's me who receives the rententon certificate.
The private plate has only been on the car 2 weeks (I have the new V5) assume that could maybe be the issue, they are closed so cannot call them.
I didn't plan to sell the car but someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
Cheers in advance people.

It would appear there has been a gap in licensing the vehicle within the last 5 years, hence it won't let you use the online system.
Just send docs in as you have said, fill in your details on the retention form and you will get that back in your name, the vehicle should transfer keeper and the new revised v5 go to the new keeper.
Give the new keeper the 12 digit reference off the green slip part, so they can tax, but send the whole V5 and green slip to the DVLA.
That should sort things, but always remember, in essence, when you hand over the car, pre the plate coming off, the new owner could end up with the plate if things don't go to plan.

Just be really careful with this one. If the new owner goes online and does the change of keeper, to tax the car (as he should) then he will receive the plate. Irrespective of what you may send off. Any paperwork you send afterwards will be a catch up excercise. It tends to go wrong in these cases and whilst fixable, it’s a complete ball ache and only if the new owner plays ball.
Best advice is to still let the new owner take the car but with the proviso that he can only transfer the car into his name once the plate transfer has happened. Lest we forget, the registered keeper isn’t necessarily the owner.
I’ve had a few situations that the car buyer has suddenly become ‘uncontactable’ once they realise that they are now the ‘owner’ of a valuable plate.
Once the plate transfer is complete, the new owner can do the ownership transfer online, with the age related plate. He can back date it, so no issues there.
Im the ‘plate transfer guru’ for a very large dealership in West London, amongst other things....

Thanks for that mate.
So tomorrow.
Let him take the car away.
Ill then send the paperwork away with the postal orders special delivery tomorrow also.
I told him i wont be giving him a new keepers slip as im sending the whole document away which he is fine with.
Do i leave my physical private plates on the car or stick them on the original ones? Assume i leave private then when i get the paperwork back let him know to swap them over.

Pretty much but the age related plates only go back on once you have received the permission to display, until then, leave the private plate on.So tomorrow.

This ship may have sailed by now but if you do give him a copy of the V5, blank out the doc ref number. The V5/2c has 1 number extra that is a random number at the beginning so any number from 1-9, followed by the 11 digit doc ref will work.
That trick has saved me a couple of times when ‘admin’ lost the V5 counterpart.
I traded my 2014 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (with a private plate on it) I told the dealer I wanted to keep the private plate, he said fine, sent all the paperwork to the DVLA (V5 Postal order & V317 form) That was on Saturday 12 April ‘20
I also SORN’ed the golf
I picked up my new car, the valeter was only there, he gave the keys & log book (Which was recorded as changed today on the DVLA website)
My question is, Can the dealer have access on keeping my private plate?
He did tell me to send off the logbook & SORN it.
All this because the DVLA website said “ This registration number cannot be retained online” i bought the golf 3 years ago as an ex motobility car, from a VW dealer
Also I paid cash on the remaining balance
Thanks

Good Morning folks
So I have an issue with my private number and wondered if any of you good folk can assist.
I have just done a deal on a car which I am collecting next week and trading in my current car. I have a private plate on my current car which I want to put on my new car. OK so far.
Went online and it said I cannot do this online and it appears that my current vehicle was out of tax for more than 90 days within the last 5 years - I only bought it in January so it may have been sitting in the garage for a while. It says use the postal service. Great I though it will take longer but it will be ok. NOPE - DVLA are not accepting any postal applications for retention due to the COVID situation and cannot say when they will be. My question is therefore... what happens when I go to collect my new baby? I dont mind driving with the age related plates for a bit BUT I'm not keen on the number remaining with the garage as they will have the V5 and I am worried it can be kept. And also I am worried they may go back on the deal as they will not be able to sell the vehicle without the age related plates.
A bit long winded, my apologies but maybe someone out there can assist? Many thanks for your time.

Hi , I'm in exact same position as you. Just sold my car with private plate on it to someone, thinking it would be as easy as removing the plate online before doing vehicle transfer but it's not happening.
How do you know the dvla aren't dealing with this via post? As I've been unable to speak to anyone so far.
I will now have to transfer ownership knowing that my private p,ate is on someone else's car and I can't say I'm too keen in that.

same position, chap collected my car and i sent off the v317 with the v5 only to find out dvla are closed for registrations and no answer on when opening again!
I have taken the new sellers contact details and came to an agreement with him to transfer it back when possible. Not sure what else can be done right now. stepmeek said:

According to website it should be slower, but okay - DVLA.
I had similar issues.
Bought a new car last month and wanted to take a private plate off one of my bikes to go onto it. System wouldn't let me take off the bike online so I sent off the noted required forms special delivery on 1st June and confirmed online a signature for receipt at DVLA on 2nd June. Still nothing since. I can't ring them, their 'online chat' says it had been disabled, and I'm stuck. Thankfully not stopping any buying or selling but still a real pain. I have another plate to go onto the bike after the swap is done which I should be able to do online but meantime I'll likely have another admin fee now for updating my insurer on the car plate change when it eventually happens having already changed insurance to the new car and I was hoping to do the plate update within 14 days when you usually don't pay again.
I don't see how you can't socially distance people in a government office - it's not like they are interacting with the public, just space the desks apart.... first world problems I know but many of the rest of us have worked through the current conditions where it hasn't been a risk.

Similar situation went to trade in my old car 29th may , won't let me do it online , so i did postal recorded delivery as directed, still nothing yet, can't even sorn it, can't get through, send email no response, so if it aint back by Tuesday going to cost me £50 in tax which is frustrating, it's bad enough when you buy and trade in a car you Pay a months tax on each ,
