My car has just been declared a total loss. It's on a classic car policy, so the question of market value is up for discussion. I objected (naturally enough) to the loss assessor's assessment as a result of which he gave me a call and went through his reasoning - including for example corrosion which was reported on MoTs indicating a higher mileage than that shown on the car's speedo. His killer statement though was a reference to previous records (I think he said on Experian) which showed that twenty or so years ago the car had a significantly higher mileage than is shown in the MoT record dating back to 2006.

So now I'm thinking of replacing the car with another classic, but would be very interested in knowing whether I can also gain access to pre-2006 records, either directly or perhaps through my own insurers. Anyone know ?

I thought I did. You said you were going to get a other classic, and asked whether you could get access to old records in order to verify the mileage, because a mileage discrepancy had resulted in the settlement on your current car being lower than expected due to a mileage discrepancy.

Is that right?

An agreed value on the next policy will remove that particular concern.

If you want to check old records for your current car, then presumably thay are available, because your insurers claim to have them. I suspect that they will say what your insurers say that they say.

As far as I'm aware the info pre 2006 available to Hpi and experian comes from DVLA's records of mileages supplied by owners when bought/sold, and from mileages supplied when people do Hpi/experian checks.

There are often mistakes though, but they're usually easy to spot.

When buying older cars I suppose the best you can do is the MOT records back to 2006 and an Hpi check with a mileage check.

If you want to be really sure then do an Experian as well, again, with a mileage check included.

After that the only other thing I've done is to call the supplying dealer, if you know who it was, and ask them if they have any records for that car.

But having said that I've found in recent years they've been very reluctant to look up old records now, maybe they get so many people asking nowadays.

As for MOT records before 2006, there wasn't an database held before then as far as I'm aware.

Thanks - I hadn't realised that Experian checks were available to the general public, but I see from https://www.autocheck.co.uk that they are, so I'll use that when I get to the appropriate time.
