UK Customs and Duties

I was wondering if someone out there could help me. I have recently imported a Mustang from the US and have just paid the UK Customs and Duties this end. I have no idea how HMRC have worked the figures out! They just don't make sense to me. Has anyone else imported a car from the States and understood how the figures are worked out? I just want to get my head around it.
