I'm sitting here, with a cold beer, watching the swallowtail butterflies compete with the bumblebees for a go on the lavender, and I'm pondering car names, nicknames and abbreviations.
You have the obvious, abbreviations of multi-syllable names, which are really just for speed/ease: Merc, Lambo, Maser, Alfa, Rolls (or Roller or, more correctly, Royce) and even Beemer. But then you have Koenigssegg abbreviated to 'segg. Why is Mercedes not shortened to 'Cedes? Why don't we talk about 'Ghinis or 'Ratis?
Some names are abbreviated even when they end up no shorter: Porker, Benter, Moggy.
Some are intended to be a code, only for those in the know: Some random string of letters and numbers intended to identify a Honda (I think) or (oddly) a Vauxhall. I think it's to do with the engines.
It's also common to abbreviate or nickname models as well as makes. Again, some for shortening, others for idiocy: Conti - yes. Cossie - no. LaF - yes. Mundano - no. 12C - yes. G-Wag (yes, really) - no.
And then you have the bizarre, strange, daft and competely moronic nicknames.
Dub (daft. Why not Volks, or 'Swagen)
Ovlov (bizarre and not nearly as funny as intended)
Scooby (daft and not nearly as funny as intended)
Fezza (Moronic)
'Rari (Utterly moronic)
Jaaaag (f
k off. Just f
king f
k off. It wasn't funny when Jeremy f
king Clarkson did it, and they're still not f
king laughing)
Coxster (see above and then f
k off again)
Abbreviations I understand. But only when they make sense. As for all the rest; why do we do it? What are we tryingt to say about ourselves?
My final question: Do I have another beer, or have I perhaps had too many already?

It will always be thus.
Car salesmen talk among themselves (allegedly) about ....
Cow - leather
Bidet - Rear wash/wiper
Oil burner - obvious
four banger - again obvious
And many many more.
Car nick names are no different and neither are Peggy for Margaret, Dick for Richard, etc
Have to say, my favourite gripe is people on forums referring to Bimmers. Sorry, it's Beemer. And stop with all the E46 stuff, I've no idea what you're talking about.

When I had a Ferrari one of the things I hated about it was when someone asked you what car you had. There was just no way to answer it without sounding like a knobber. In fact even just reading the beginning of this post again makes me cringe. I would never have called it Fezza or Rarri or F-Car or any of that nonsense but I just could not escape the fact that every time I said Ferrari a little voice in my head said "you cock".
So I sold it and bought a Vauxhall Vectra and the problem went away.

Really?? Volkswagen badge is VW, said phonetically is Vee Double-U, which becomes Vee Dub. I have not heard it shortened to simply Dub but then I am a boring old git who is not down with the masses.Or have I missed the point, in which case I will keep an eye out for a parrot??
