I have heard it mentioned on here that in shops that have a post office as part of the shop, it is possible to tax your car when the post office is shut at the actual normal till in the shop because the terminals at the checkout have access to some of the same systems that the post office does.

I have heard this is possible in London, although I have been told it is not possible in a smaller town.

Does anyone have more specific information about this or has tried and managed to do it themselves or failed? Or knows where it is possible from hearing about it elsewhere?

If so, where was it successful and where was it not?

I'm wondering if it's a more common thing in major cities or whether it is just a London thing, or whether it is common in most shops which have a post office inside them.

If you know where this is possible, details of the exact shop and it's address would be helpful too.

Thanks

This should show you branches open today near you and if you click on refine branch services you can specify to only show branches that supply vehicle tax.

Except it's often wrong. A branch not too far from me is apparently open till 10pm 7 days a week. It's not, never has been and certainly wasn't when I tried to post a parcel a 6:30pm on a Monday at least 3 years ago now. Shop assistant just shrugged when I suggested they got it updated. Post Office never responded to my enquiry rolleyes

So, OP comes to this forum to ask a question, that by going to another more specific website would provide a better answer. That is soooooo PH.com!!!

This. It's all checked online so all you need is the reminder (Or V5C / New buyer slip) and your debit/credit card

I bought a used car yesterday (Saturday), was told by the dealer that I would not be able to tax it online and had to go to the local Post Office (in a Tesco store) to do it. If it had been a weekday it would apparently have been fine doing it online in the showroom.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly? The information I requested is not available on the post office website as it seems to be unofficial information. I can't tax online for complex reasons, and I cannot tax within the hours normal post offices are open. I'm also trying to find out about a useful alternative method to taxing online or in the post office so I know for future reference if I am in such a predicament to need to know that again in the future. I want to know where I can tax in a shop with a post office when the post office is closed. Not find a post office. I'm not familiar with the term "so ph.com" either. Perhaps you could explain that? I assume OP means new forum member? I have been reading posts on here for a long time, so i'm not exactly new. I just haven't posted before here.

So there are 2 ways to tax a car, online or in a post office and you’re looking for a way around those 2 official ways? Maybe paying by direct debit is one way to avoid this problem you appear to have.

I’m assuming it’s a bank account issue that is the complex reason?

You can pay certain bills and post basic stuff if the counter is closed but is varies from place to place, never seen one that is able to do car tax however, they always say PO counter only

Generally the post office counters in shops only offer a basic subset of full post office functions. It’s a fairly complex job in some ways and takes quite a lot of training, so they keep it simple for the shop counters.

Why not call the post office customer service centre and ask them? It’s under the contact us section of the post office website.

Have you got the V5 new keeper slip?

Then you can tax it online, unless the slip you have been given is not the right one.

Allow me to explain the full complexity of the situation as there are other elements of this that I would like information about if anyone knows such details.

I previously bought a car and was handed the new keeper supplement and used it to tax the car. This was prior to the system changing where tax is cancelled once there is a change of keeper. I think there was only a month or 2 of tax left on it. Anyway, the log book didn't come through so I applied for a new certificate using a V62 form and sent if off in the post. It wasn't till afterwards I realised that the tax was due very soon and the new log book might not come through until several weeks after the tax was due. After making enquiries, I was told the only way to tax the car was to fill in ANOTHER V62 and Pay ANOTHER fee. I could not find the V5C when sending off the first form, so had to pay the exhorbetent fee. I was told by the post office I would have to pay the fee again for another V62 application unless I could find the V5C/New Keeper Supplement and was not prepared to pay the fee twice. I then rang the DVLA and they told me if I found the V5C not only would I not have to pay the fee, but I would not even have to send off another V62 form as I could tax again using the V5C for a 2nd time. Sending off a 2nd application could have confused things even more and potentially caused another problem.

I said I thought the V5C could only be used once and up to 3 months after the date of transfer. I was then told that since 2013, a new keeper supplement can be used multiple times. Soon after this I found the V5C, however it CANNOT be used more than once online, ONLY at the post office, which seems rather stupid. The further problem is the post office STAMPED the new keeper supplement over the bar code so it could not be re-used! This is presumably the way they were trained before the change in the system in 2013 and post offices have not been told that they should not be stamping new keeper supplements any more. It doesn't make sense to stamp a V5C when you are allowed to reuse it, so my only logical conclusion is that they are not supposed to be stamping them any more, yet many post offices continue to do so. What other explanation could there be?

Ever since that whole debarcle, I have vowed not to let post offices stamp my new keeper supplement whenever I buy a new car to avoid the chance of any repeat of something like this. The more the system becomes ridiculously complicated with more and more variables, the greater the chance of something else like this going wrong. I want to be sure I always have something that I can tax with in case something goes wrong with the system or other paperwork again. However, I am sick and tired of having to argue with post office staff about this who don't seem to know what they are doing and look at you as if you are suspicious somehow for not wanting it stamped. In my experience in recent years, it is a mixed bag now with regards to whether the post office will stamp the V5C. Some do, some don't so it seems at least inconsistent. I figured by using a kiosk in a shop with a post office when the post office is shut, I could sidestep their stupid stamp and another argument, as it seems very unlikely a normal till operator would have a stamp to hand.

I guess my questions are, what are others experience with this? Does the Post Office normally stamp your V5C or not? (since 2014). Also, does anyone know the official policy on this? And finally will the post office accept a copy of the V5C and let you tax with that assuming the bar code is readable? I just want to be able to tax without their horrid little stamp or having to explain myself every time.

I had the V5, which the guy in the PO kept to send off. Must confess I didn't check it particularly thoroughly, being not particularly bothered.

As I said, it won't let you use the V5C online if it has already been used. I don't know if that is deliberate or a mistake.
