I've been tracking the prices of S80 V8's for years now, it's been one of the cars I've owned and I liked (they sound epic, but they drink petrol like there's no tomorrow) and would like to own again, but the current AT situation is bonkers. Either we really are in the bubbliest of bubbles of all times and when it crashes it will cause serious damage or some people are delusional.

Around 12 months ago a 10 plate with 50k miles was on sale for 9.5k. And that felt a bit too rich (you'd be lucky to get 6grand as a trade in) but if you wanted a nice one of these it was worth paying IMHO. This though is insane. And it started from the joker at the bottom who has been trying to sell this car for good 9 months now, starting from 17k (IIRC) then he went to 20k, then came the joker with the red car and started from 16k, now he's at 30k and the black one decided to join in recently.

And it's not like these are anything that special. Unless you're an owner of Noble M600 who wants to have a spare engine as a back up just in case (but even then, these are pretty bullet proof so it's not worth it unless you race your M600).

That is bonkers, but you can see how this speculative inflation comes about on rare cars if just one person chances their arm.

It'd be great if AT would say how long a car has been listed for, and what others have actually sold for, but that'd go again their customers' (the sellers') best wishes, I guess...

I had to same when I sold my 3.0 estate X Type. Cars not dissimilar were up for anywhere between £2.5k and £8k. Funnily enough, the ones under £4k sold fast, and the ones over didn't.

This can be derived from the URL provided that the same ad has been extended rather than new ad purchased when the old one run out. The bottom one has been on AT since 2017-09-08 https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201709089119969

Yeah, I don't think this much transparency would make the sellers happy. I can easily see how someone who happens to have some spare cash and wanted to own one of these dives into these ads sees that the "market" prices are between 30 and 16k and buys the silver one - since it's got such low miles - after haggling for 18k. Which is at least 8k too much. Insane.

There is this one (advertised on the Volvo Owners UK Facebook group) for £7800: https://www.facebook.com/groups/362251927175573/pe...

I thought the first one was way over priced, then I saw the others!

How does the price compare to similar age BMW 550's, Audi S6's and Merc E500's? Can't imagine they'll be going for much more than £15k, so can't see why the S80 would be so much more expensive.

I'm pretty sure I remember looking at these a matter of months ago following an article on PH and thinking that they were pretty good value, so either I'm losing my mind or the sellers of the above examples have lost theirs!

Perhaps the seller is hoping there is now a renewed interested in large engined Volvos now all the new cars are 4-cyl engined.

I also pay close attention to the S80 V8 market, and I have to agree it’s due to the chancer trying to sell the one at the bottom of that screen capture.
Presumably no one is mental enough to pay these prices, so the bubble will burst before too long. I like these cars, but they’re not GT Porsches, no one is going to pay £10k plus over market value for one.

40+ grand.

When the market collapsed in 2008 dealers were selling 1yr old cars for silly money. I saw one for 13k and boy do I wish I bought one then!

I bought one of these from a main Volvo dealer when it was 6 months old with 7k miles on the clock back in 2007. Fully loaded, lots of spec. I paid....

What is the reason for the high price? I can't understand why speculators would think this model is worth it!
If you want a super-saloon for £30k here's an option most would probably choose over the Volvo.

that silver one for £25k has been up for sale for a year or so at about £15-£18k. I'd buy one of these but i'd be looking more in the £4-8k range personally.
