So the girlfriend bought a new car. All excited to drive it and then boom.
DVLA system is down, can't be done online, telephone or post office.
Monday is when it'll be back online - Doh!

DVLA system being down and unable to accept payments wouldn't be an issue if they scrapped road tax and added it to fuel duty.

We're fortunate to have access to other vehicles but it must really leave some people absolutely stranded.

I tried to check driving licence just now, and was redirected to try via a "secure" means, did so via post office option, and once in directed back into dvla check licence site and did it....maybe you could try that way?

Be careful what you wish for! At the moment the average tax must be about £200. If it's added to fuel I bet it would be £1000s.

It's been well publicised that the system will be down this weekend. If you have missed the opportunity to tax it before Friday it's still highly unlikely that you would get any kind of penalty if you simply taxed it ASAP on Monday.

New from a dealer and not taxed or private and previously taxed? If private and previously taxed, it will still show as taxed, as the previous owner can't un-tax it, so I'd get in and drive.

Also the system wasn't anywhere near real time (2016), having been stopped for no tax six hours after taxing a newly purchased car on-line...whatever you do is going to take time to filter to a PC in a Panda.

My road tax is currently £30 a year so I definitely don't want it added to fuel.

It is due next month, £30 up front of £2.63 a month.....

Meanwhile, I currently get bumraped for £255 a year for a 19 year old car worth £1,000 in which I do 1,200 miles a year. I do what the government claims to want us all to do - walk and use public transport where possible - and I'm punished for it. Winners and losers however they do it!

The best thing about the transition to pure electric cars will (hopefully) having to read this being suggested over and over again - even as the transition to electric happens...

More likely that the police car uses an offline copy, updated once a day.

And there lies the issue with RFL. You probably take up roughly the same space as my Jag, yet my RFL is £530 a year. I don’t care tbh, but I’m already penalised for CO output by the amount of fuel I use. Why should I be penalised again for taking up the same space as a similar sized car on the roads.

But the point is you probably will be even worse off if added to fuel.

I've got 4 cars, but only drive one at a time. I'd still rather pay based on the current system.

Agreed. My point is that all cars should be taxed the same if they use the public highway, including the lecky st.

You are trying to apply logic to tax..a pointless exercise hehe
