So I'm coming out of a company car in the near future and will have to buy & insure my own car, but I'm unsure how many years no-claims I can declare.

My employer will provide written confirmation that I've had 2 years claim-free insurance history which I think most insurance companies will take as evidence of 2 years no claims.
The reason it's only 2 years is I've had 2 no-fault accidents, although costs were only recovered in one case.

However I also run a classic car on a regular car policy through NFU - they are aware of my claims on the company car insurance and have just sent me through the renwal notice, which shows I have 8 years no claims.

So I've effectivedly got 2 different levels of no-claims, from 2 different insurance companies.
Can I just use the higher one, or could this come back to bite me in the event of a future claim?

Cheers.

I'd opt for the 8 years, they are asking how much NCB you have, you have 8 years, they will also ask about claims, you'll need to declare your claims.

You only have one lot of bonus, the 8 years on your own policy. Letters of claim free driving on a company car are not ncb, although some insurers may choose to give you the appropriate discount. That's up to them.

Ncb is something you earn by being claim free on a policy in your own name.

No.
You can only use a "set" of NCB on one policy.

You have 8yrs on one policy. You have 2yrs towards a second policy. If you needed a third simultaneous policy, you'd have zero for that.

Daft question - why have the classic on a normal policy, not on a classic policy?

What you're after is a policy where the insurer will "mirror" the NCB on your classic vehicle.
Surprisingly easy to secure, especially with the explanation that you're also been a company car driver.
Just tell them how it is.
Doesn't help for plugging details into confusethemeerkat.com though, which I am guessing is your first route for quotes.

Not a 3rd policy, it will replace the company car

for the classic I just went with the cheapest insurer who included roadside recovery which didn't have a vehicle age restriction. It turned out to be a non-classic specific one. Still v. cheap on a very low mileage.

Thanks & you're right - online comparisons can't cope me with having 8 years no claims but also an unrecovered claim 3 years ago

Just to be clear, you don't have 8 year's no claims to use unless you cancel that policy or otherwise stop using it.

However, what you can have is however much no claims a new insurance company is willing to give you in the circumstances when you explain the circs to them. Comparison websites will not be able to help you in this quest.

As above.

Each NCB can only be used on one vehicle.

If you have earned 8yrs NCB on one policy and 2 years on another, then you can use 8yrs on one of your cars and 2 years on the other. Not 8yrs on both.

That's true, but as someone else said some insurers will mirror you NCB. But you probably won't manage that online!

I bought a 2nd car in 2014 and my local A-Plan broker and they found a company that did exactly that - worked for me. biggrin

Try calling a few firms OP - you may get a pleasant surprise!

In this case he hasn't earned 2 yrs on another. He's got a letter saying 2 yrs claim free as a driver on a company car. That isn't ncb.

Technically, ncb isn't actually a thing anyway! It's just an arrangement with your current insurer based on their ncb rules and practices. Then you can make a new arrangement with your new insurer based on the arrangement with the old one, your current circumstances and the new insurer's practices.

The rules and practices vary quite widely between insurers.
