My daughter had just phoned to say someone has bashed her car but has left his details.
Does she get his insurance details directly from him and contact them or does she contact her own insurance and let them sort everything out?
She will need a hire car when it's is getting repaired.

Cheers.

Edit. Just phoned number and "not recognised" but have witness and plate which comes back as insured.

Police are going to get in touch.

Depending on her age, you might be better off contacting the person who damaged the car and asking if they would pay for the repair without insurance companies, a claim, even no fault will rocket the price of a young persons insurance.

Probably best to contact whoever left the details first of all. Dependent on the level of the damage they might wish to come to an arrangement where it's sorted without involving insurance, if handled properly then everyone wins as nobody has a claim on their insurance record (despite what they tell you that if it's not your fault it won't affect your premium, it will!) and they get to keep their no claims. A place I used a while back to fix my front bumper, paid for by me, lent me a courtesy car free of charge for the duration of the repair, sure other places will do similar.

If you do then decide to put it through insurance then your daughter will have to contact her own insurers to make the claim for her obviously passing on the details of whoever hit you and they'll sort hire cars etc.

Police have been back in touch and because they left their phone number even though it's fake they won't do anything about tracing the driver!

Will get a quote first but as yet have not seen damage!

Cheers.

Her insurers will be able to. They'll also be able to identify the other person's insurance company too.

Scratch my earlier comment then, if they're leaving a fake phone number then I wouldn't trust them to sort out an arrangement for the repairs.

Pass on what you know i.e. reg number and witness details to your insurers. They'll sort it all.

Complain to the police, the driver has committed an offence by not leaving their actual details. Potential PCOJ too by leaving fake details?

Was very surprised by the police passing the buck when they will have his details and could easily give him a visit.

I'm not ...

Had same some years back, 2 witnesses, bit of investigation by myself turned up a neighbour of the 3rd party who explained they had got rid of the car after an accident, Police not interested, the civilian operator I spoke to even said that she didn't care my car had been hit.

I made a formal complaint and got as far as speaking to the depty chief constable of the force involved, still nothing was done

Can't be bothered with the ball ache of complaining to the police so have got a form from dvla to get his details and will get a quote tomorrow and take it from there, but going by the age of the van and the description of the guy from witnesses the only way to get anything will be from insurance which Iam very surprised the van has!

Just give the details to the insurance company, you have the registration and a witness. They will do the rest. Check the DVLC site for free to see if it has an MOT and the number matches the car. Then sit back.

The vehicle is insured but worried about how it will affect her renewal next time around through no fault of her own?

She has to report it whatever happens.

What the extent of the damage vs the value of her car?

Given that the guy has provided a fake number I would worry if he's really insured ie is he using cloned plates?

This!

Oh and quite surprised at the police. My brother was hit by an uninsured driver, who then promptly left fake name/ address/ phone number details at the scene.

My brother called the police afterwards with the cars reg number and not only did they go around to sort the problem out, but they took my brother with them to identify the perp. Got his real details and charged him.

The claim ended up funded by the MiB.... eventually.

There was no injury so the police will record it and then go and have a cup of tea.
