What is the biggest jump in car ownership you’ve made?

I don’t necessarily mean Uno to Arnage, but when did you truly appreciate an upgrade in ownership and what was most noticeable about the transition?

For the whole family, it all started with a trusty Ford Escort and Toyota Carina. Step up for us was going to a BMW E39 528i (we still have it) and a Vauxhall Vectra. Was close to having a Rover 75 instead of the E39, very glad we didn't do that! The E39 was nice, but ex-lease I believe, we had bought it from a lease auction. The Vauxhall was relatively new however, we ran that into the ground literally. We got an XC90 as the family grew, but the BMW still felt nicer. Only when we got the E70 X5 did we feel that we really stepped up. Was the first truly powerful car we own, and is a truly luxurious car. Add to that the supercharged Audi A6 we got a few months ago to replace the XC90 and we can definitely say we have stepped up, and couldn't be more grateful for it.

With hard work comes many car milestone step ups, and that's not even the full story.

I'd probably say Megane 225 Trophy to Mercedes CLS63.

Been used to hot hatches throughout my 20s, got into my early 30s and decided I wanted something comfortable, powerful, well spec'd and with a silly engine. Initially looked at M5/M6s then landed on the CLS!

Saab 99 to modified Opel Manta - the first car I bought myself and back into RWD cars.

It was arguably inferior to the Saab in every way except feel / fun and at the time, it was exceptional at that.

Started with a 1965 848cc Mini and the pinnacle for me was probably a nearly new E Class on the driveway with a Griffith 500 tucked away in the garage.

Gone downhill since, now an 8 year old high mileage E Class on the driveway and a 15 year old SL in the garage, both worth the best part of not a lot.

But I am happy smile

In terms of the single biggest jump, I went from a Morris Marina on it's last legs to my first company car, a brand new
BMW 320i.

Ford Mondeo Ghia to MY99 Impreza Type R, when they were still relatively new to the UK roads in 2000.

I'd had to drop a R5GTT and 309GTI combo to buy the Mondeo as a 'sensible' family car to carry successive new-born's three years previously, so it was nice to step back up again to something with a grin factor.

First trip out, my eldest was sick all over the seats.

Metro 1275 Sport to Sierra XR4X4...the Sierra felt like a proper performance car to me(I was only 20 at the time). I was really chuffed with the XR4X4 in comparison.

My favourite milestone was swapping my Mondeo ST24(which I just didn't like at the time) for my Nissan 200SX(still the favourite car that I've ever had).

Viva with perforated wings, floor and with a rippled roof (because we had danced on it) to a Midget 1500.

Years ago I went from a Yugo Zastava with a rumbling diff and screaming wheel bearing that was painful to be in over 45mph to a Rover SD1 V8 .
Last big jump was from a Citroën Xantia with seized suspension to a Jag XJ6 Sport .
