On my way back from work yesterday. There is 2-laned main road about 3 miles long that I usually travel on. 50mph limit.

Part way along this road, the left lane has been closed due to roadworks. Yesterday, everyone else had moved over into the right lane at the 800 yard mark, leaving the left lane completely. The traffic was at complete standstill.

I decided to continue in the left lane right up until road closure. Had an Audi SUV horn at me, and someone pulling out (to block me off) as I was passing all the standstill traffic which was in the right lane.

Was I wrong to use the left lane until it closed? I merged with adequate leeway, despite the numerous people deliberately not allowing me in.

Is it common decency to 'queue' in such situations? Why, why not?

Nope completely in the right imo, there's a tunnel near me that goes under the runway of Leeds Bradford, 2 lanes merging into a single lane after the tunnel. Everyone sits in the left lane queueing through the tunnel and get a right hard on if anyone tries to utilise the right hand lane right up the merge point

Nothing illegal and if everyone used all of the road, the queue probably wouldn't be as long but we're British so GET TO THE BACK OF THE QUEUE YOU OIK

If the Highways people wanted the merge in point 800 yards earlier, that's where they would have set it.

Thanks all, I thought as much.

What is the stance on this from an 'advanced driving' perspective?

You were quite correct in that you used the recommended "zip filter" method. For many motorists its a long time since they read the highway code.

Rule 134 Highway code.

"Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed."

It’s the retarded & selfish nature of British people. Especially lorry drivers who purposely block two lanes to prevent efficient merge in turn (aka, zip merging).

Works perfectly in Europe & the USA.

By not zip merging, it at least doubles queue lengths & causes chaos.

Its a mixture of some being a bit of a martyr based on staying on the inside, and then getting resentful when someone goes up the outside as it is indeed seen as pushing in, it isn annoying but it would work much better if one car went one way, then the next the other.

Like so many things in driving, if we all thought about the common good the roads would flow better, that scenario you see where a car is waiting to turn right into a side road and they get blocked by oncoming traffic, nobody giving an inch to just let them turn and then let the traffic flow again, each time we say "No, fk you I am not letting that car in, it doesn't affect me, why should I", yes it does as next time its you waiting to turn right or sat behind the car waiting.

Yes you were wrong. But then you already knew that or you wouldn't have posted.

Coming up to a merge in turn you just need to use common sense. Its okay to pull up along side someone and merge in turn at the end, its what it was designed for. Its obviously going to upset if someone's been waiting there for ages and you just drive straight past the queue already formed.

It easy not to offend, just be sensitive to what's already there and think on your feet.

If there's a single queue that was there long before you, don't piss them off and join the end.
If everyone's merged in turn and the decision to join either lane isn't going to jump beyond people already there then join the shortest side.

Honestly its that easy. Alternatively you could take the advice on here and stick two fingers up while quoting the highway code. Eventually karma will happen and you'll meet someone as belligerent as yourself. The cars will be damaged. It'll be 50:50 on the insurance.

You take your choice.

Luckily Ronnie Pickering wasn’t waiting in the queue. He’d of challenged you to a bare knuckled fight and then taken to you to the infirmary.

But he isn't actually in the wrong is he, also why should he join the end of the queue just so he doesn't upset some bedwetters who don't know how to use a merge in turn properly

Absolute trollop. All of the people you've "offended" also had the option to use the left hand lane. As an above poster said - if the highways people wanted the merge point 800 yards earlier, that is where they would have put it. Join the shortest queue, zipper merge at the pinch point. We paid for the road network, best use all of it.

If you get some turnip preventing you from merging, merge behind them. Or behind the bloke behind them.

Had someone try to speed up and block me a few weeks ago when I came down the lane to "push in" at the front, stopped in the merging point, wound the window down and asked him what was wrong, could see him going balistic and turning red in his drivers seat, then I drove off and gave him a thumbs up out of the window. He was already near the front, so me going in front of him wasn't going to delay him at all, but it was such an obvious speed up attempt that he tried, was pathetic.

Surely the merge in turn point started at the 2 lanes in to one point but due to heavy traffic the merge in turn point now is moving backwards?

Personally I would merge in turn at the back of the queue. I’m still merging in turn. But yes I am british so feel it is the polite thing to do!!!

And no I have never got belligerent about it. I just merge in turn at the place that is right for me to do so.

I’d have just let you in it’s fine. But why not merge in turn where everyone else was.... at the back of the queue? It would have avoided a confrontation and that’s how I drive.

I know that tunnel well. Its particularly bad for merging as people get a real hump if people merge in turn there, more so than other locations.

Because if everyone merged properly, there would be a lot less of a queue, traffic would flow more freely and people wouldn’t have to get the hump about ‘pushing in’ its pretty simple.
