Presumably as a little island, Brexit is not going to make a blind bit of difference. Does this mean that pre-speed limiter models are going to increase in value?
Being a petrolhead has been going out of fashion for a long time but the whole concept of being a driving enthusiast generally seems to be dying a death. Society is telling us that roads are no place to be having any fun. I do wander what other unintended consequences will come out of suppressing this enthusiasm. An element of thrill seeking and danger is very primitive and instinctive...

Unfortunately you may be right in your assessment.Being a petrolhead has been going out of fashion for a long time but the whole concept of being a driving enthusiast generally seems to be dying a death. I remember doing Computer Studies back in my schooldays (1983) and doing an essay on how computers might affect the world in the next 40 years (at the time the first computer 'ENIAC' had been designed 40 years earlier).
My (half joking) conclusion was that as computer games became more realistic they would desensitise users to risk/reward.
And as a result future generations would not seek real world thrills.
Motoring being a prime example. You can be a driving god on an X-Box without all the real world costs/risks.
I think my assessment was perhaps more perceptive than I imagined at the time. 1983 + 40 years = 2023
Far fewer youngsters even bother to learn to drive.
Sad but true.
The Motor Car RIP
So @ 16.01 It's fake news perpetrated by Jacob Rees-Mogg.
Perhaps Auto Express are Brexiteers.....https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/103530/mandatory-speed-limiters-due-on-all-cars-within-three-years

It’s a common trope that young ‘uns these days aren’t learning to drive. My two (16 and 14) are gagging to learn, as are all their mates. I’m not aware of anyone in their group of friends that isn’t.
Ditto with booze. Apparently they're all teetotal now. That doesn’t exactly feel correct from what I’m seeing....

That's just to get away from you though...
(Same with my two, we live in a small rural village which isn't much fun for teenragers, but one has now gone to Uni without his car as parking etc is a bind, the other is desperate to drive but just so he can run himself about).
Road pricing wont cut it
EVs and the various enforcements - speed limits, restrictions in city centres etc. would have far greater implications than being appreciated, I believe
Road pricing would discourage journeys and ownership, especially if EV prices have not come down to what the masses can afford.
Affordable only via lease deals, battery replacement / full EV replacement only by main dealers all in place of servicing and repairs, means a big hit to the parts, maintenance and servicing industries. Big job losses for regular car mechanics, shop keepers at petrol stations etc. etc.

I just read an article and the car will only bong at you and display a warning message. Speeding will still exist.
Followed by permanent speed limiters shortly after the introduction of this BS? Do you really want to drive over the speed limit with a constant beep beep beep beep? andy_s said:

Probably the case! I think if you live in a city, a car is a PITA, just like it always has been. More people live in cities now. But if you're in the sticks, a car remains an essential part of life.

The proposal is to make this bunch of tech mandatory, in the same way that ESP has been mandatory for some years;
- Advanced automatic emergency braking systems
- Lane departure warning systems
- Intelligent speed assistance
- Alcohol interlock installation facilitation
- Driver drowsiness and attention warning
- Advanced driver distraction warning
- Emergency stop signal
- Reversing cameras or detectors
- Accident data recorder
The limiter tech is the same stuff you can spec now. If you turn it on, it will infer the speed limit by GPS mapping, sign recognition or both, and apply a soft limit. If you push the accelerator further you can override it.
The EU proposal is to make fitting these systems mandatory and make them default to on when you start the car.
