Hi all,

Long time lurker and decided to make an account.

I wanted to get some advice from you guys as to where I stand and what do I do.

I have a 68 plate A7 s line 50 tdi. Which I've had 4 months (4.5 weeks of those spent in the dealer)

Wondering where I stand with this;
I sent an email at the beginning of March to Audi UK to escalate the issue.

Please see a quick summary;

Car went in Jan/Feb 3 times for door card rattles and creaking suspension and the dashboard rattle (creaking suspension fixed on 1st visit, dashboards rattle still present and door card rattles still present). Have showed technician and service people the problem and it's still not resolved.

3rd time car went in was told dashboard rattle fixed but it wasnt 20mins later rattled really badly.

Escalated to Audi UK on March 5th.

Car went in again on the 19th March to fix the dash rattle. I didn't get the car back till last Friday. I escalated it to Audi finance last Monday as I got sick of hearing the same thing that they're working on the car.

So I pick the car up on Friday Everything seemed fixed until I got back into my home town and it started rattling on the right hand side drivers side. I did call the dealership they said to come back (45 mins drive) or they said to drive It around for a bit may just be me over thinking things. I drove the car again yesterday and it rattled, I recorded this as evidence.

Come today I drive the car to work and the centre dashboard starts rattling again (which its been in twice for already) I also record this and sent the 4 videos to the dealer, Audi UK and Audi finance.

So I ring Audi UK to ask what to do and they say ring Audi finance, Audi finance tell me my evidence isn't good enough the dealer needs to confirm it. So I take it to the dealer after work..

I take the head of business out on the route they took my car when they had it the previous two times. And the car doesn't rattle. Which I knew it wouldn't, and imo it's not a true representation of the roads I drive on (A roads etc). The dealer said that if it doesnt rattle on the test drive roads then there isn't a issue. It would rattle by now... now here's me thinking that I can get It to rattle quite badly on my commute to work, so I suggested for the dealer to come to my home and we go on a drive where I drive the car as I would be able to get the car to do it. He has said hes very busy for two weeks and now I've got to live with this stupid rattle for another two weeks.

I'll link my YouTube channel below where I've posted all the rattling videos;
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4e8a0xiFOzsffOIR...

Look at my uploads and you'll hear the rattles etc by the correct dates.

Now idk if I'm being overly picky or what, but a 65k car shouldn't rattle like this, the dealer had said door card rattles happen and theres nothing they can do about it (to me that's a load of bull), but whatever.

What's my next step of action? I've escalated all I can and Its not getting me anywhere, should I just accept the goodwill and live with my rattling A7 or what?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi,

Can’t offer any advice but I have an Audi A6 C8 that I bought new in November and it has suffered ever since with a rattle that sounds exactly like yours. I’m sure you know it has the same dash set up as your A7.

It has been in three times so far, one of which they damaged the passenger door card and I had to wait several weeks for a replacement.

Its currently booked in again for the start of May but from my own experience and from reading yours, I’m not hopeful it’ll be fixed.

I certainly don't think we should have to put up with such annoyances on new, relatively expensive cars.

I’m fairly sensitive to rattles, I’m convinced all cars have them and on less smooth surfaces you need to just learn to tolerate them. From bog standard city cars to larger exec stuff (new and used) I’ve never had a car that didn’t rattle occasionally or make some noises as warm air blew through a cold dash. I can’t tell from your videos what road surface you are on. If it’s a rough surface I would tolerate it, should the road be smooth I wouldn’t. Just my view.

I see what you’re saying but this is a very loud rattle that you can, at times, hear over the sound of the radio. I’m sure the OP’s rattle sounds worse in person too.

I had the previous A6 for 5 years that made no such noises and I also own a 15 year old V70 which understandably has a few rattles but nothing on this scale.

There was an autocar test with a new A8 vs 7 series and they commented on the rattles in the A8 being unacceptable, all cars do rattle a bit sometimes my 7 series does when it does it sounds like a bit of radio interference but it's only on very coarse surfaces and if you have the radio off then you can hear it but it's very infrequent.

This next bit sounds daft but I find a really good clear out and vacuum often stops lots of rattles, keys, pens, loose coins can also be the cause of unwanted sounds.

Definitely not acceptable. I have a £13,000 Suzuki which I took back for rattles. I definitely wouldn't accept them on a more expensive car.

Wouldn't let me reply for some reason last night.

Firstly I wouldn't buy a Mercedes hence buying an Audi as that's the car manufacturer I prefer.

The air vent in the car has been replaced twice (the A6 and A7 share the same interior yes), it's good to know that at least 2 other people share the same issue I have.

This morning on my commute it didn't rattle badly but a small rattle is there. Only when I go over roads surfaces that are really harsh e.g. just before they tarmac a new road it'll rattle really badly.

I'm thinking of paying someone to sound deaden the whole car as Audi don't really care about the rattles anymore and I can't live with constant rattles every day. It's such a shame as the car is brilliant otherwise. Amazing interior and amazing to drive. I never had these issues with my B9 A4 and 8v A3.

Really doesn’t sound acceptable, I had a seat leon that had a rattle quote similar to that, they found it to be the cable that links to door to the opening mechanism, which rattled against the inside of the door, their fix was to cover this with a foam sleeve, which worked, they did it to both doors, could be the same issue I suppose!

Doesn’t help the dash one though

Reject the car.
Realise that Audi is not a premium brand anymore.
Buy a Lexus.

Wouldn't be putting up with that. I'd be changing my stance from "I have a rattle, can you take a look?" to "I have a rattle, get it fixed."

Then hate the gearbox, lack of any discernable character and st media system, in your silent cabin.

Seriously, try a different Audi dealer to see if they can fix the dash rattle. Like any set of representatives, there will be good and bad ones.

Sure about this? I'm not convinced...........

Everyone I know who has had dealings with Audi, have all said the same thing "bunch of knobs", I guess when they have to deal with a certain type of person all day, they harden up to it?

My GF worked at an Audi dealer for a few months, she left, said they were some of the worst and most two faced human beings she'd ever met, every single one of them, and she didn't want to end up being like that.

As a long time Lexus fan, when I came to change my V6 IS250 in 2016 I simply couldn't bring myself to buy anything they sell these days. Nothing of interest whatsoever, barring perhaps the F models, but then the competition opens right up and yet again they lose.

I feel they have lost their way a bit. And the skinned Toyota infotainment systems they currently tout are bloody horrendous.

I tried to reject the car they wouldn't accept my rejection. I'm trying to get it to rattle again, but it didn't rattle yesterday when I took it to Audi.

I would try another dealership but I ain't had any good luck with previous cars, the dealership that's 10mins away from me.

Audi finance want the dealer I bought it from to confirm the rattle is still there, only then will they consider doing something...

Also wouldn't buy a Lexus either, only one I'd have is a LFA but will never be able to afford one Haha

That rattle would drive me nuts.

As someone who has handed an RS6 back (not with the same problem), the finance company is the key to getting this problem sorted.

Have you tried pressing and holding different parts of the dash to try and identify where it is coming from?

Squeeze beer mats in any gaps, see if that stops it. This is obviously temporary, but might indicate where the problem is.

I wouldn't put up with those rattles on a cheap van, never mind a premium car!

I've generally found dealers pretty useless when it comes to anything involving the interior though, with the worst culminating in me using my own tools to remove the heater fan motor from my car in their car park, and carrying it in and emptying a load of dry leaves out of it onto the service manager's desk. This was after he'd given me a lecture on how difficult it was for them to diagnose rattling noises in the heater and that the vibration I was complaining about was because they had 'cleared out the heater ducts and it was working better'. (it was a well known problem with that car that leaves would get into the motor if they weren't careful when changing the pollen filter).

Returning to the OP's problem. I'd suggest trying to find out whether it's possible to stop the rattle by pressing on any particular bit of trim from around where the noise is coming from. You might need to ask a passenger to do this depending on where the rattle is. Then jam something like a small piece of paper in whatever joint is rattling, take it to the dealers and tell them to fix the rattles in all the places where you've jammed the paper. The paper will probably stop it rattling in the meantime - I had an old Tesco receipt which my mate had jammed in the side of the de-mist vent on top of the dashboard in an old car for about 2 years once!

It's doing a fair amount of their work for them, but ultimately the aim is to have a car that doesn't rattle. For me, I'd rather not be without the car for days whilst they fiddle around trying to find/fix the problem (or more likely spend ten minutes on it then leave it parked out the back for ages to give the impression they've really been working hard on it).

With my current car, when that rattled shortly after I bought it nearly-new, I took that one step further and jammed one of those black felt pads meant to go on the bottom of chair legs into the gap and carefully trimmed off anything visible. 6 years and 100000 miles later it still doesn't rattle.
