Hello PH,

Hope you can help

I'm trying to find a rental company that will let me hire a convertible car for a week.(Potentially this month but ideally in August.)

However, I'm starting to notice a trend in that the minimum age for a lot of these companies is 25. (I'm 23)

Some car hire companies will allow me to hire a car, however these are smaller cars like Golfs/Corsas.

With this I've been turning to AutoTrader and eBay in that the only apparent way after researching is to potentially buy one but ideally, I'd like to save some money and rent one.

Anyone else on here that maybe has more experience that can help me out? Should I rent or buy and sell end of August/September?

Just looking for some "fun in the sun" as my girlfriend and I have a holiday in August down in Cornwall booked that I'd like to hire one for.

Based in the West Midlands for reference.

If I were to buy my budget would be £2500.

(No points, had my license for four years.)

Thanks.

TL;DR "23, wants a convertible for August, should I buy cheap or rent? Downside to renting is that the minimum age for a lot of rentals is 25."

What kind of convertible are you after?

You can get an mx5 for well under a grand.

Something with good safety and modern really. I did think about MX5s but I just don't think they're very safe.

What area are you from?

There are plenty of prestige hire companies that are able to provide decent cars for hire at your age.

OK. An Mx5 and a helmet.

I’d not consider an Mx5 unsafe. Why would you think that?

Unless you can find somewhere mainstream to rent you a convertible you may end up going with somewhere obscure with a draconian mileage restriction and some hefty costs and deposits. A lot of the time their pricing is geared to a one day jolly and the minimum age is usually 27-28.

Owning just for a one trip would be major hassle but it may well wind up cheaper.

I don't think you'll find much in the way of rentals for under 25.

I'd go for the MX5 - It's perfectly safe if you don't crash it smile

With a budget of £2.5k I’d buy and sell quickly.
But of hassle, but might even end breaking even if you’re a decent haggler.

A decent £10k Porsche Bicester will be with £10k a week later.

I'm old enough to remember the Morris Oxford.

You could have one of these:

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Comes in under budget and I'm sure you could sell it on after using it for a month for pretty much what you bought it for.

P.S. I didn't look far for this, there are probably cheaper ones out there, maybe even a 6 cylinder one, which would add to the experience as well.

These ideas of buying a car and selling it are all very well, however at any age the insurance "mid-term adjustment" fees plus the extra for insuring a convertible at age 23 are probably going to run to a couple of hundred quid.

Mk3 MX5, either a 1.8 or 2l if you can find one in budget. Great value for money, perfectly safe and much more pleasant for a longer journey than an earlier model. Easy to drop the roof and you won't struggle to sell it.

You could try DRIVY

This is P2P car hire and it looks like they will cover over 21's and it starts around £300 for 7 days, although I only checked London, you would have to check your location, see if there is anything there.

Talk to these guys, £925 to rent a Morgan for the week, the rest will cover the extra deposit they will want for you being under 25.

MX-5's are fine, I use an 04 plate on track and I had a spin off and went into a tyre wall at speed and no injury whatsoever, not even the obligatory stiff neck.
as long as you don't flip it over I don't see them as being unsafe particuarly
