Hi

Im going round in circles with this one and wonder who else has recent experience of insuring a 17 year old

We're about to buy and insure a car for our L driver, whilst on L plates it seems cheap enough but Im not clear what happens when they pass their test.

Surely we either cancel the learner policy and take out a new one with 0 NCB, or else phone up to pay the balance of the change in licence for the remainder of the year which gives some early NCB on renewal however have heard of some good old "admin" charges being applied to people who have done this.

Anyone a few steps ahead of us in a similar scenario please with a friendly insurance recommendation?

Cheers

The reasonable priced learner policies seem to all stop dead when the test is passed.

We've just gone with flux for a learner policy for my daughter - can't say that I'd recommend them though - I'm not impressed with them at all.

17 year old son. £1234 for the year, Suzuki swift 1.2, blackbox. Wife and me on as well, including us commuting. He is allowed to commute to school and another place of work. That is the price for the year, if he passes or not. Also allows him (touch wood) to build up a no claims bonus.

Set up through A-Plan in Oxford. I normally use A-plan in Thatcham but they said it had to be done through the young driver department in Oxford.

The cheap £300ish ones all stopped when he passed.

I paid £350 or so for a policy for a newly turned 17 daughter in a Fiesta via Halifax. About 7-8 months later, when she passed her test, I paid an extra £600 to upgrade it so she could drive unaccompanied. No black box. Yes, there was a £25 charge as well! If she'd have been wanting to rush into the test (and pass) I may have been better off choosing a company with a higher initial "learner" price but a lower" passed test" price. I think I found companies that would have insured her on a full licence aged 17 (as if she passed on her birthday) for slightly over £1000 from Hastings, though they didn't offer cheap learner insurance.

At renewal, with 1 year NCB, I found a policy for £650 (without a black box) again from Hastings. This was last month.

Prices obtained via confused.com and comparethemarket. Comparethemarket didn't work for quotes this year as the 1 year NCB and only 6 months full licence seemed to upset their software.

We used Veygo learner insurance for a few days here and there while my son learned in my old shed Mondeo.

Just gone Admiral Blackbox on an ‘06 Clio Campus 1.2 (early 18th) and we were shocked.....

£734 per annum, limited to 3000 miles. For a 17yo lad. Not sure if Worcestershire is a particularly moron/scrot free zone in terms of other road users. £4k to add him to the Mondeo.

MoreThan smart wheels were similar.
