I recently had the dubious pleasure of a Ford eco sport as a loan car. It is, aparrently, a small suv based on a fiesta.

Given a Fiesta is a reasonable car, the eco sport was horrible.

Strange driving position, slightly angled with the relative positions of seat, pedals, steering wheel and gear change being just enough out of range to be comfortable.

Seat adjustment insufficient, not enough rearward travel.

Gear change vile, weighted badly towards 1/2 plane rather than 3/4.

Add the weak, unresponsive and totally uninspiring engine to feather light steering and spongy suspension.

Probably the nastiest car I’ve driven in years, uncomfortable, unpleasant to drive.

By comparison, a Vauxhall mokka is brilliant.

Rantette over, thank you.

Now oddly I found the ecosport much better than mokka, juke and renegade when I considered one.

That being said, all were relatively full but that doesn’t make them bad in my opinion, in fact it makes them near perfect as far as the purchasing general public are concerned - no drama, fuss free, simple motoring

The last dire car I drove, was probably a beaten up Renault Twingo rental in Gran Canaria probably 16yrs ago. Every panel dinted, barely ran, soft top wouldn’t close, really it should have been scrapped!

The most truly horrid car I have ever driven was a hired Toyota Camry that I was forced to drive for 2 weeks in Australia about six months ago.

Base spec, tinny, vague steering, an engine that produced a lot of noise but very little performance, flat uncomfortable seats with nasty trim and control stalks the wrong way around.

Switching on the wipers every time I tried to turn left nearly drove me demented,

Downright awful.

I accidentally owned a Toyota Auris 1.3.
It was utterly dire.

Interesting. The Mokka is almost the ultimate in white-goods-cars. Does nothing badly, and nothing more than adequately. Nothing to offend prospective buyers.

The eco sport felt like it was designed by a committee of elderly guardian readers keen ramblers.

The eco sport couldn’t manage that. I’ve a 60bhp Skoda Citigo which in a far better and more entertaining drive, but only 4 seats.

My auntie has an Ecosport which replaced an old CMAX, to be fair for the low mileage she does it's perfect. It's compact, cheap to run and roomy with a high seat. The 1.5 non turbo petrol is gutless though and the dash is very plasticky.

I wouldn't buy one, but all of these small crossovers are equally as anonymous - most will only be used to go to Tesco and back.

In terms of properly dull cars I give you the Mitsubishi Mirage...

We also hired a Twingo in Gran Canaria at a similar time. Liked it so much I bought it and shipped it home! Lovely little 'dodgem' of a thing. Kept it 5 years and sold to a buyer in France for more or less what we paid.

More recently I hired some non-descript Citroen with 3 cylinders. Rubbish in every way - Handed it back to the rental co in less than an hour (Did get a free upgrade mind).

Never driven one, it looks like one has to be 85+ to drive one.

I expect sales for these kinds of cars are based solely on a very vague brand loyalty as well as a 'sort price high to low' approach to decision making. Goes forwards and backwards doesn't it, job done.

The latest Subaru Forester. I had the misfortune of having one of these on my recent Australia trip. The seat was uncomfortable, my foot aches after half an hour as the throttle was at a weird angle, the engine was horrific, even though it was a flat 4 it sounded awful, the cvt gearbox was hateful, it weirdly had a reverse camera but no parking sensors, it also did that horrible jap car thing of revving it’s tits off from a cold start. It was just generally hateful. Even the key was an old fashioned looking thing that looked like it could also start a metro.

The worst bit? I looked them up when I got home, they are around £30-35k!!!

Not all bad, it was bookended in terms of hire cars by a Holden Commodore and a Kia Stinger.

I'm sure I read the ecosport was Fords main world car and is sold all over the world and popular in South America .

I saw one in my local ford dealer , top of the range St line one , I then saw it was £22k blimey !!!

I'd rather have a Dacia duster , can the ecosport handle any off-road at all ?

Good point, but certainly my 1.8 used to do 60 miles per gallon on a run....

The Vauxhall Meriva.

If your life is over and you want to tell the world then buy one of these automotive disappointments.

I hate this car with a passion. Drivers always seem angry and these dashcam imbeciles who drive these odes to failure seem to want to take it out on everyone else by dreadful driving "technique". Anyone who drives one should be forced to carry a donor card so at least they give something back to society at some point in the pitiful and pointless lives they have.

(that should do it)

I'll one up you in the Jap direness stakes - Nissan Almera Mk2 1.5.

Managed to handle *and* ride like st. Asthmatic engine that felt like it was missing some of the 16 valves.

Just to comment on the stalks thing- that's incredibly common in Australia. I believe JDM cars are the same.
