I'll keep it short and simple.

My dad sold a car for £4,000 a few months ago and he was dumb enough to give the whole V5 to the buyer.

The guy didn't send off the V5 and is being a retard speeding, parking, driving on bus lanes etc. Dads getting all of the tickets sent to his home. The police doesn't care they just told me to tell DVLA that we sold the car. The guy is driving without road tax and insurance on a car with a V5 not in his name. He bought the car for £4,000 cash (the money was not fake).

I just don't get what the point is? If he gets stopped by the police can they take the car?

I've notified DVLA and contacted the people that sent the tickets. I'm thinking if there's anyway I can recover the car? Or do anything so this guy ends up in trouble or without a car?

If you have notified DVLA then any further fkwitterry from the new owner will not come back on you/your dad. In terms of the ones already received I am not sure - phone the DVSA and see what they say. If you have any proof of sale then that will help.

The point is that he can do these things and know that he cannot be identified/probably doesnt give a toss. Not that many actual police around to catch him now. Not sure you have any grounds to reclaim the car..... if you sold it and got the money it is his now, you just need to let the DVLA know that you no longer have it.
In terms of him driving it around uninsured / no tax etc then plod will *eventually* catch up with him and the car will be siezed.

So, why not complete the register keeper transfer online? Granted, bit like shutting the gate once the horse has bolted but to be honest, making sure you're right as far as informing the DVLA goes... is kinda critical. I do the online transfer with the buyer present, before the car leaves my address.

Presume you have details of the person you sold it to.

Write DVLA a nice letter, explain that you've informed your Dad of his mistake in not sending off the V5, or updating online, but say he's just not clued up about selling cars.

Give DVLA the date of sale etc...

Send copy of that letter to all the councils that have issued fines, although I'm sorry to say you'll have a battle on your hands to fight them.

All I can suggest then is to call DVLA and seek their advice.

Trouble is to transfer it online, he would need thr new keepers details and would need to know he code from the V5 - which he has given to the new owner.

Phone DVLA, they will advise. You will likely have to write to them as well

As advised above, write to the councils who issued tickets advising that the car has been sold and the date, and that you do not have the new keepers details. See what they say.

If he hasn't sent off the V5 then technically he's still the owner - report it stolen they will soon find him and then he'll be keen to get it registered in his own name lol

If he doesn't know the new owners details i don't see how he can update the V5 ..... did the buyer pay cash ?

All the DVLA are going to say is its the registered keepers responsibility to update them.

No he isn't the owner. No point reporting it as stolen as it isn't stolen...

The owner is the person (or entity) who bought the vehicle and retains legal ownership. The keeper is not always the same person in a number of situations, e.g. a finance company "owning" a car, so it does not follow that "in reality the reg keeper IS the owner", although in many cases they may be one and the same.

Hello everyone,

I believe I'm on the right platform for the relevant advice. I'm caught up in this situation - I brought a vehicle from an online auction for my wife but she didn't like the vehicle so I decided to sell the vehicle and I posted it on Facebook marketplace. The vehicle came without the logbook ( I wasn't the registered keeper for that vehicle at all). So I sold the vehicle straight away without a logbook and advised the buyer to get a logbook (V5c) by filling out a v62 form and sending to DVLA.
After a couple of months, I have started receiving tickets for parking offences from the auction and third-party private property parking offences. I do not have buyer information and details because I thought the vehicle is not in my name and I'm not the registered keeper so I don't need to get their details however they did a bank transfer and approached me from a Facebook marketplace so I have the buyer's name only. Two people came, one of which approached me from Facebook and the other lady who sent money from her bank account. This is the only information which I have.
I've appealed the tickets I'm waiting for the reply but I also need to report to DVLA I tried to call them but their phone doesn't ring and I'm wondering where else should I report this matter. The auction company said I should contact the vehicle offence support team but I didn't find their email. I'm lost now - I have no idea what to do - please give me some advice : how can I solve this matter : helpful advice will be really appreciated

This happened to me years ago. My inlaws sold my car and gave away the whole V5. I started to get fines which I had to advise were not mine. And then the police turned up one day as the new owner had carried out a hit & run on another car. And then I got a warrant for my arrest through the post. In the end I went to court and had to stand in front of three JP's and give a 'statutory declaration'. So this was me declaring on oath that I was not the owner of the vehicle during these offences. I was 100% certain bearing in mind it was something like a 3yr sentence if you were found to be less than truthful.

Get a lawyer and be more careful next time.

So you got a car from auction, and instead of waiting a couple of weeks for the V5 to come through, you decided to sell it on anyway. did it not occur to you that getting a legit V5 from a car purchased without one before selling on might be a good idea?.

Secondly, selling a car on FB, Why didn't you get the buyers name and address?. What would happen if the transfer didn't go through?. It's belts and braces stuff, and didn't anyone come and look at the car?.

You're telling us you sold a car with no V5to a random off FB without getting any of their details and trusting them to sort the V5 out themselves.

In that case, you have zero sympathy from me.

How are you getting tickets when there was never a log book registered in your name? And why would you be getting parking tickets from the auction place? They wouldn't have registered it when they sold it so how are they sending you them?
