I was sad to read that Jim Randle, an important but seemingly sometimes rather overlooked British engineer has died. There may be a thread on this already but if there was, I was unable to find it. I felt his death should be marked on Piston heads.

I well remember an interview of Jim Randle by LJK Setright in Car magazine at the time of the XJ40's launch. That and Setright's glowing overview of the car were enough to persuade my late father to buy one. Randle was a very clever man and a superb engineer - the technical cleverness of the XJ40 is witness to that. He was also very well liked. I didn't meet him, but a number of members of XJ40.com did. Despite his great intellect, he was a remarkably modest man - and described there as friendly and down to earth.

I know. It is unbelievable that they haven't.

Edited to add:

There is an in depth interview of Jim Randle on the Driven to write blog:

Rear about this on DTW earlier today. A sad loss, and a man who achieved much given tight resources and difficult politics; his XJ40 saw Jaguar through from 1986 to 2002 in various forms, and his effective update of the Jaguar IRS was in service right up to 2005 in the X100 XK8 (although the Ford updates for X300 onwards made it worse).
