Wondering what you guys would do in this situation :

Bought a set of used OZ Ultraleggera for my car.
They were advertised as mint condition. No damage etc.
Agreed on a price of £850.
Although he was incredibly keen for me to send the money early. I didn't and only sent a £50 deposit.

The guy kindly delivered them to me.
However it was night when he did so, and the wheels were completely filthy and covered in dirt, brake dust etc. He apparently wanted to clean them but had no time as he sold his car.
I looked as best I could short of getting out my jet wash to clean them and they seemed OK and paid him the remaining £850.

The next morning before taking them to the garage to get the tyres fitted I noticed an admittedly small but noticeable crack on the face of the wheel going across one of the spokes.

This is not my picture but it was basically the same type of damage, albeit mine was a little less obvious and a bit smaller.

Anyway I of course messaged the guy I bought them off, and at first he seemed apologetic but then decided to turn nasty when I went onto the topic of a financial resolution IE some money back / refund / covering the cost of a single replacement wheel.

At that point he became quite aggressive - even saying that I must have done it myself that morning - Of course the wheels were still in my garage and never had been fitted to my car. I did remain calm throughout and was constantly saying that it sucks for us both etc.

Ultimately he said he would give me £100 back which I don't think was enough, but nevertheless it helps.

In the end I had the wheel cut back and welded and decided to sell the wheels on as the whole idea of them had been ruined for me by this point - I was completely honest with the guy I sold them to and they were priced accordingly and luckily someone local bought them.

To be honest I could have had the repaired wheel powdercoated and said nothing and you would have been none the wiser but wanted to do the right thing.

The catch is, the guy I bought the wheels off has now completely blanked me, has not / will not send me any money back.
So not really sure what to do.

Overall including all of the running about and costs for welding I am around £300 down after selling the wheels on and of course gutted.

I have written off the money as I know it is impossible to get anything back legally.

i have considered outing him on Facebook but I don't really see the good it will do. The lad is in the Army so I'm sure it would be seen and picked up on.

I also try to avoid airing dirty laundry in such a way, just very disappointed with him given how honest I am when it comes to things like that.

Anyway my lesson from this is to never buy wheels which have not been cleaned & in the dark :-D

You agreed a price, paid him a deposit, then after a cursory inspection you freely paid him the remaining money.

Not sure why the seller should pay you any compensation at all.

Just take this one on the chin. You admit yourself you made only a glancing inspection having noted the wheels were dirty. You could have asked him to come back another time with the wheels fully cleaned, or cleaned them yourself (wd40 on a cloth would have cleaned them up for the purposes of inspection) and inspected them while he waited. Not to have a go like, but that;s just the benefit of hindsight. We all take a stance on thinking people can be trusted, even when red flags ("he seemed in a hurry") are flying, and honest-natured people dont like to keep someone waiting, so we rush a process as not to inconvinience them any more than they need to be.

We live, we learn, eh?

In this instance I'd tried to have gone through ebay or paypal knowing I'd have some comeback.
I expect they weren't advertised there and not sure if you'd be covered with cash involved anyway.

It’s the reason I only buy / sell used stuff locally for cash.

The hassle of private transactions over distance via couriers outweighs any benefits.

Jesus are they really worth that much? I've got a set of Superlaggeras in a barn at home. May give them a clean up!

ETA: just re-read - Ultralaggera. My bad.

You paid him £200 per wheel essentially, and are expecting more than that for just a crack?

Did the seller have a legal number plate ?

Just checking smile

I think there’s not a lot you can do.

You checked them, you must have been satisfied or you wouldn’t have paid.

So of the £300 "loss" how much was the repair and how much from reselling?

Well the wheels if they were to be resold as "mint" (advertised as such) wouldn't have lost much if anything as they are just the price and don't lose value now unless damaged.

A new single wheel is £330.

I sold the wheels for £600 with full disclosure about the damage and repair.

The cost of running about to repair the crack (not including my time) and fuel and cost to remove tyres etc to accommodate is over £120.

As I thought nothing I can do and I have written it off. As general comments seem to agree -
Lesson learnt. Next time I'll make the guy wait and clean the wheels if they were dirty smile

But again my cynical part makes me think he deliberately left the wheels dirty.

Not that it matters anyway . Can't do anything now.

But the guy did say he would give £100 back but had since blanked. I suspect he has spoken to friends who told him not to. How this geezer acted is certainly not how I would go about business! To accuse me of causing the damage etc.

I'm just a little bitter about it to he honest as I did save up a lot to buy those and were really excited about it , and personally would (and have) refunded items or given money back if there were problems with items I sold.

Our community of car enthusiasts thanks to Facebook is too small to mess about people like that.

If it was only 120 for the repair why didn’t you keep them ? As long as there not buckled I can’t see why you have an issue with them ? The weld will be stronger than the alloy
