Hi, my car broke down and had RAC come out to recover me.

The guy got his trailer out of the van, got the front end up the ramps, put his flashing lights on the back for my car, and off we went.
He was taking me to my local garage.
We got to the top of the road, just less than a mile from the recovery point, we take a right and he said, "oh, your cars come off."
I looked in the wing mirror of the van, and saw my car rolling backwards into the road we just exited. The straps hadn't been put over the wheels, so it was not secure.
When we got back to my car it had mounted the pavement and hit a concrete wall, doing damage to the back end.
I have had an email telling me they are investigating the incident, it is going through their insurance, and they have been seemingly helpful.

My question is:- Can I tell them to keep it and replace it, because I don't want it back, As it was not damaged when they took responsibility for it.

That is poor and I'm sure everyone will understand your frustration.

It is an accident and their insurance company will repair the car just like all other insurers do after an accident.

Its an accident like any other, so you’ll just need to put up with recompense for your loss, but you shouldn’t be short of a penny over it. I’m sure there will be some goodwill involved.

At least this isn't another thread where you want 10 grand because your water pump failed 1 day after a jump start on your shed!

No, they just have to repair it and give it back to you.

Or if you’re unlucky- you will have to get it repaired and then get them to settle the bill.

It’s not like it’s a one off car that’s been totalled , it’s a standard production car that can easily be repaired to a standard which will not affect it’s resale value.

Why don't you claim for whiplash while you're at it?

Looking at it, its a new tailgate and bumper, both of which will be Ford only parts and are bolt on, so it should be a decent job as its straightforward, no panel beating or filler.

I would expect some damage needing straightened under the bumper.

Yeah, probably the bumper support will need fixing or replacing aswell as some trim around the inside of the boot

Not a RR, Veyron at the very least, and as another poster suggested, claim for the Whiplash you got when you twisted around to see your car rolling down the road!!

Edited cos I was maybe a bit sharp with you, Sorry.

They'll repair it properly at least. Probably offer some compo/bribery to keep quiet as well. Don't think I'd be putting it on Facebook or Twitter until they make an offer, let them save face first! They'll be as embarrassed as hell knowing you'll tell the AA why you're joining them! biglaugh

That is just amateur hour, I bet the recovery bod is getting his nuts roasted for than one.

My question would be, do you have to use the RAC recommended bodyshop or can you decide who repairs it under these circumstances?

I can understand your annoyance having the RAC damage your car, all the hassle, etc. As the paint looks metallic make sure they blend on all adjacent panels and insist any panel that is blended, the whole panel is lacquered.

Strange with the last couple of threads both blaming the RAC with new members. No name and shame issues either.

Maybe PH will soon be sponsored by the AA?

It would only become a cat N if they wrote it off.
