First Post people so bear with me.
Friend has a Audi 3.0 tdi 2014 biturbo. It's been remapped, intercooler, injectors, exhaust, filter. Hes currently expecting/got 420bhp and 1000nm of torque.
Here's where the dilemma gets interesting... He's claiming it does 200mph. Part of this is he says it's was reading 185 and he backed off and the other back up is it does 100mph in 8th at 2000rpm. So at 4000 rpm by his reckoning it will do 200mph. Please advise people.......

If his car does 30mph at 4000rpm in 1st gear, it will do 240mph at 4000rpm in 8th gear.

Hope this helps

But top gear, 2000rpm is 100mph. So by his reckoning 4000 rpm is 200mph. What reasoning destroys this argument

Err, wind resistance for starters, also, giving a car more power doesn't alter the gearing, whatever the cars top speed was before is what it is now, it'll just get there a bit quicker.

Did he have the seats flat and cadence clutching, hit 200mph easy? My mate had a Honda Civic with an Enzo engine and 4 superchargers, did 250mph.

You mean the theoretical top speed? Most cars’ top speeds are limited by drag rather than gearing so increase the power and you’ll increase the top speed. Obviously as the drag increases with the square of speed the amount of additional power you need for each extra mph increases rather rapidly.

It did occur to me after I posted that more power = more 'push' to overcome drag but as you say when speeds start getting silly you need more and more power to go a little bit faster, I can't see the top speed of a 400 bhp A6 being much higher than a 300 bhp A6.

My Google-fu reveals these come with a top speed of 130 out of the box. His remap must tell the engine to use longer revs on his 8th gear to hit that speed! He should get his gearbox remapped too to make 8th gear even longer. He could hit 240 then..

I'd be surprised if he could hit 150 with current gearing.

The MRC B5 S4 did 204, however that took a 3 litre conversion, hybrid turbos and 690bhp.

For comparison, my old S4 had 500bhp, and would do about 180 flat out.

Rod Tarry’s Cosworth did 206mph, that took 800bhp.

Doubling the revs does not double the speed rofl

Also, I notice you saying “expecting” 420bhp, I assume he hasn’t had it on any rollers?

Just a heads up, less text talk. Proper sentences and an attempt at grammar goes a long way on here. smile

Explain to him that during the remapping they mistakenly flipped it over to km/h.

Hope that helps thumbup

Another argument against this logic is that speed does not exponentially increase with revs and gearing. He has already travelled through all gears and all power bands to get to that speed. It wouldn't magically double if he doubled his revs - even with another 8 gears.

Scruffs - The ones that lie about top speed at that.
