Conversation in the office today turned, somehow, to which arm you use to put your seat belt on with; surprisingly there was a defined split with all the men using their left arm to reach across their right shoulder to the belt, pulling it down and plugging in in one motion. All the women reach back with their right arm and pass it to their left hand to plug in.
As a UK-based forum, let's assume we're all in RHD cars for this. I wondered if the left/right arm divide is reflected across PH?

t-posting, I know - but I'm curious about unimportant things.
I hate wearing seatbelts, always have, right from day one, when I leaned heavily on my Asian female G.P., laying it on thick about claustrophobic tendencies, and she wrote me a 12 month exemption, urging me to gradually wean myself into using them.
I never, ever, wore one when I drove a Black Cab, we were exempt if we had a fare on board, or were plying for hire, but not if we were empty, and the TAXI light wasn’t lit.
If I HAD to drive my wife’s car, she had a Volvo, then two or three Fiats, now a Peugeot 2008, I’d use my right hand to pull the passenger belt across, then plug it into the driver’s seat.
I could only get away with this if I was alone, if she was in the car she’d go ape s*it.

I agree that the vehicle concerned definitely influences the options.Most of my current cars are small 2door hatchbacks or coupes where the seatbelt buckle is hidden from sight behind my head and my right arm struggles to find the buckle easily. So I pivot and reach across with my left and then/pivot back & drag it straight into the clasp.- that is how I voted.
However, In a big roomy 4door car where the pillar is next to my head and the buckle is easily visible I would typically use my right as that is the more efficient movement.

On a similar but not similar topic, I'm trying to train myself to open the door with my left hand. It's called the Dutch reach, but I prefer to call it the Dutch reach-around, because it makes my wife roll her eyes, which I have deduced is how she exhibits amusement. The idea is you look over your shoulder for cyclists as you reach with your wrong hand to open the door.
Loving the male-female ratio we have here on Dadsnet, by the way...
