Hi,

First of all, sorry, I know this should maybe be in Speed, Plod & The Law but as a new member it won’t let me post in there. No other forums seem as knowledgable so I’m taking my chances!

Can anyone advise me on what the punishment is likely to be for doing 66 in a 50 (M’way)? Mainly regarding the points, I’ll deal with the fine, whatever it may be. I’m reading all this band B stuff and assuming that it’ll be 4-6 points? But after reading a few threads on here with replies from people who definitely know more than me, I don’t know if it’s more likely to be 3?

Yes, I know speeding isn’t big or clever, so no lectures needed please lol.

Please help!

Sounds like a standard fixed penalty to me, 3pts/£100. Cant imagine you we’re going fast enough for a summons.

Also may depend on whether it's your first offense, they may let you go on one of those speed awareness courses, think there around £80 or so, I might be wrong?

I know of someone who wasn't doing as much over the limit as you but speeding none the less, think it was 38mph in a 30 zone and she got the option of either take 3 points and a small fine or go on the course.

Too fast for a course (max 64 in 50) so 3points and £100

Was 56 from your speedo or from some official document ?

Course guidelines are max of limit + 10% + 9mph so you might scrape in there if it was your reading of the speedo....

I know with Thames Valley Police the following applies for being eligible for a speed awareness course as long as you have not attended a course within the last 3 years,

30mph. 35-42
40mph. 46-53
50mph 57-64
60mph 68-75
70mph 79-86

Typing is not my strong point smile should have typed 66 not 56

At an indicated 66 - you have a good chance of having been actually travelling at 64 or less (64 is 50 + 5 + 9)

If an official document OP received stated 66, then likely no course.

I hope that is clear enough

Thank you for the replies.

No, it’s officially 66mph, so too fast for the course by 2mph, I know that. I’m just wanting to know the likelihood of it being £100 and 3 points VS a % fine and 4-6 points.

At the moment we’ve just received the NIP,

I say “we” because my car is in my mums name so technically SHE has received the NIP. I have had my license less than 2 years (2 in March) and so if it’s looking like a potential 6 points (which will mean a loss of license), I need to go down another route that doesn’t include saying it was me basically lol. I know it’s not great but hey.

Lose licence - go to gaol - lose licence - go to gaol - such a hard choice

Wait till the last minute for your mum to reply to the Nip, it’ll then take a few days for them to reply. Then you take the maximum time to reply and we’ll be in March. You’ll have had your licence 2 years and you’ll be fine.

Well not fine but you know what I mean. Take this as a learning opportunity and be more diligent with your speed.

It is the offence date that matters not any other.

I suspect 3 points + £100 fine.

Hmmm...'not great' is an understatement.
