I am considering joining Costco as a Private Customer, primarily for the cheaper fuel as I drive about 20,000 miles a year in a Volvo C30 1.6 Drive E. with a Tuning box.

As far as I can see, they use Kirkland Fuels : they say they have engine cleaning additives etc.

I am not a business user, but my daily commute is around 70 miles, and there is a Costco near where I work.

Anyone had experience of using Costco diesel, and is it any good.
Any comments welcome !

Not used their diesel, but used to frequently use their super unleaded in a Golf R. Never had any issues with it.

I have a business account with Costco and everytime I head over I fill the tank with their diesel.

Never had an issue yet.

When my tyres are looking like they need changing, they'll be doing that aswell. They are alot cheaper than nearest tyre place to me for the Michelins I like.

Used Costco fuels exclusively for a few years (Costco round the corner), didn't have any issues with either.

The fuel prices paid for the membership with ease.

It's just fuel from the same outlets as shell, BP and all the supermarkets.
Fine to use.

Even doing limited miles the membership cost for me is done pretty quickly. I've used both petrol and diesel from there for a couple of years and it's been fine. Bonus as they do higher octane too.

What are the prices like? How much is the membership?

I don’t have a convenient Costco, but I’m curious now. If you’re only doing 20,000 miles a year and in an economical car, I wonder how quickly it would pay off vs supermarket diesel

My workplace reckons to have just joined this and said that we can now all get membership if we choose to? Yet it sounds like anyone can get it?

Someone care to inform me better?

Costco is great full stop, their fuels are a bonus but I've been a member for a good few years before my local one put up a fuel station.

Not everyone is eligible to join, there are certain criteria that you need to meet.

I was a sub-contractor for Jet Fuels and Costco was one of our customers that we would deliver to.

They get fuel from other brands too, we only did a handful of sites in the UK. Unlike any other customer, Costco actually would take un-aditised fuel from us and then add their own additives themselves on each forecourt which is very usual. They definitely did add the additives their end, as on a couple of occasions the staff on-site added too much additive and it took the fuel off-spec and it had to get diluted with more un-aditised fuel before they could continue to sell it.

It's fine to use.

We've been using it ever since they opened, making use of all their fuel types/grades. The forecourts are always very clean, there's always someone on hand should you need it, and their pump handles are never allowed to get full of diesel and muck - always pristine. As said above, they add their own premium additive package on-site, and they only sell 'premium diesel' (a la BP Ultimate, Shell V-Power, Esso Synergy or whatever).

These days the prices are generally a couple of pence below the local supermarkets. It used to be a greater difference (about 5p to 6p) but they're coming more in line lately, that I've seen. Still well worth it though, as you're getting premium tier fuel for below supermarket prices. Never had a moment's trouble with it, as you'd expect from any UK fuel retailer tbf. Their diesel is a local taxi favourite and I do agree the family wagon (S-Max) runs very well on it, with a bit less noise and more pull than supermarket special (more 2EHN added I suppose). You'll get your membership money back, and don't forget to pop inside for pizza, microfibre cloths and screenwash. wink

Why does it have to be any good?
You have a Volvo C30 1.6 Drive E so any diesel is going to be ok- why would you even think about it?

It’s cheaper and the forecourts aren’t total cluster fks

I’d say go for it if it’s convenient and you get Costco membership

Kirkland is Costco’s own brand for anything from shirts to suitcases

The forecourts are always clean and tidy with an attendant to hand, the fuel is cheap and of good quality. I use my local Costco for a fill-up whenever I visit.

Thanks for all the replies.

To answer the question " it's only a C30 1.6 Drive E diesel so why the concern etc,etc ..."
I have heard of issues with using cheap supermarket fuel in my area, from people in the motor trade, so I choose to use 'decent brands' ie Shell/BP/Esso

So from the above replies, the consensus seems to be that it will be fine to use.
And hopefully the higher 'octane' or rather cetane number will add a bit more power.

My main issue is to reduce my fuel costs but without causing problems in the long term for my engine...genuine concerns I would have thought....

Yes, you have to scan your card at the pump
