Aston Martin Vantage | High Mile Club

"The most well-travelled modern Aston of recent years", with more than 200,000km to show for it...

While the Aston Martin V8 Vantage is renowned as a great GT car, there are certain journeys it isn't ideally suited to. It obviously wouldn't take on off-roading especially well, or be the greatest city car in the world, or serve as a particularly brilliant estate. Yet this particular Vantage has taken on all of those feats and more, having been the first car to drive the Asia-Pacific Highway.

Of all the ways to complete the 10,000 miles from London to Tokyo, a V8 Vantage would probably not be high on your list. Even the advert for this one admits the route was "gruelling", that "no sterner test of a modern production sports car" existed. Moreover, you probably wouldn't take a 100,000-mile V8 Vantage on such a demanding route, but that's exactly what happened here.

Back in 2006, this Vantage was part of Aston Martin's 'Project 30,000' celebration, where 30 employees drove 30,000 miles in 30 days to mark production of its 30,000th car. Consequently, the 2005 model had already covered a six-figure mileage by 2007. It was then that adventurers Richard Meredith and Phil Colley secured use of the Vantage for their 49-day drive through 18 countries - the length of the Asia-Pacific Highway. Their aim with the drive was to raise awareness of (and funds for) road safety campaigns in the developing world. It took "oppressive heat, frustrating bureaucracy, inhospitable terrain and petrol supply problems" to achieve, but 'Driving Home Road Safety 2007' was completed exactly on time. Meredith even wrote a book on the journey, a signed copy of which comes with the Vantage.

Perhaps the most extraordinary achievement, however, was that the Vantage is said to have taken it all in its stride. Don't forget this was after 100,000 miles of use already. The advert states that "minor modifications" were made for the trip, though the most significant appear to be raised suspension and a more serious sump guard. The Aston apparently never missed a beat, "proving a model of reliability and performing faultlessly throughout the trip". Pretty remarkable, really.

Sold in 2007 to benefit the charities involved, the Vantage has been with the owner who's now selling ever since. It's lived a much more sedate life over the past 13 years, covering less than 1,000 miles a year, meaning the odometer now stands at 129,000 miles. Or 207,686km, given it's a left-hand drive car. Funny to think that majority of that was achieved while Tony Blair was still Prime Minister, but it remains a fair achievement for any Vantage; the next highest mileage car after this one in the PH classifieds has almost exactly half the mileage, at 65,000.

The Vantage is going under the hammer with Silverstone Auctions next month, just serviced at Rybrook Aston Martin Henley and with an MOT until next September. It's only had four MOT advisories since 2008, in fact, if that helps allay some concerns. Either way the car richly deserves high mile hero status - very few Vantages will live half the life it has. And those keen to embark on more European road trips (once they're possible again), what could be better? See you at Le Mans...

Lovely car. Given theres one for 25k with just under 100k miles on AT, I'm guessing this won't be massively different, sub-20?

Nice! Reminds me of my annual visit to the Ferrari specialist to do some works on my 40k miles Maranello. On the ramp was a heavily stone chipped Maranello with a rather scruffy underside. I asked the service guy what happened and he just pointed me to the odometer.... It read 175k miles (285.000 km). I was amazed and only had admiration for the owner.

Some interesting sponsor stickers on it, Oerlikon who not only make gearboxes but quite a lot of armaments. They know a thing or two about being bullet proof...

Maybe for the sump guard?

Still one of the best car designs of all time IMO. Simple, elegant, spot on.

AT LAST, something worthy of the title 'High Mile Hero'. To the Editors: 100k on a 25 year old, relatively low stressed 3 litre Supra, is NOT even worthy of a 'Mid Mile Motor'. This however, IS much more like it - more of this please!

As per some other examples in the high mile club recently, 125k in a modern car like the Vantage shouldn't really be noteworthy.
Mind you, 200,000 km sounds rather more impressive...

Ahhh c'mon, ya gotta give us more information now!! How has the reliability been then: anything major? I love hearing/reading about cars like this that have been properly driven and enjoyed, and being able to reach mileages that make a mockery of their 'fragile' reputations. My current daily (of 10 years!) has over 210k miles on it now, but it is a 3 litre diesel Audi, so is to be expected (though my old 944S2 has just under 140k miles, but I've had it 19 years now!). But 157k miles on a Vantage? Superb sir!!

We can only take credit for about 14k of it unfortunately, and it’s lost it’s history along the way, but from what I can piece together it’s done about 12k every year it’s entire life and doesn’t seem to have had any major problems except those caused by two small accidents it was involved in. And nearly every bugger bolt being seized up nowadays!
Gearbox is very very whiny, but has been so for our entire ownership and a removal and refurb isn’t much cheaper than replacement when it does finally go pop...
Biggest expense thus far was a small plastic timing chain tensioner broke, unfortunately needing engine out to get access, which entailed 6hrs of labour on 2 stubborn subframe bolts alone. Painful.
It’s just finishing having a well earned cosmetic refresh now so well timed if PH wanted to talk about it. I think I’ve only heard of 1 Vantage with higher mileage by 8k or so.

Nothing to touch these for the price at which they can be acquired at the moment.

Well I personally would love to hear about it. I have honestly been toying with the idea of either a Vantage or an older DB9 for a few years now, so hearing that one can be realistically enjoyed like this is fantastic to hear. I love fiddling with cars and bikes and so have a pretty decently specced garage (pure stress relief!), so with something like yours where you no longer have to worry about depreciation and/or getting a 'dealer stamp in the book', you can afford to spend the time on it yourself to keeping it in fine fettle. PH - call this man!! wink

I agree with you. All these decades of engine development and we're getting dizzy about 125k miles from a 4.3 V8. I ran an 80's E28 BMW M535i to nearly 190k without it needing more than an exhaust manifold gasket. Even my first car a 1986 Mazda 323 1.3 went to 130k (and still running strong) with me thrashing it within an inch of its life on a daily basis..

Double the mileage and then it may be worth talking about.

My Audi C4 A6 TDi Quattro Avant has 363,500 miles on it. Just passed another MOT after changing both front lower arms. I'd happily drive it to Tokyo!
