My mum has a 2014 Mazda 2 which has turned into a shopping trolley that does about 100 miles a month (if that).

It's been serviced by the main dealer until the last service which was in 2019.

The 2018 service was a 50K service and the 2019 service was an interim.

The car has only done 13K total.

I've tried a few local independents and I'm a little surprised that they don't seem able to just bang the number plate into a computer and say "Yeah it needs XYZ doing if you want to stick the manufacturers guidelines".

So when you have a mechanic asking "full or interim mate?" what's peoples views given the age and low current and ongoing mileage please?

I’d just get an interim inspection with a oil/filter change if it’s isn’t already included.

Mazda will print out the service history if you go and visit them.
Then stick it in the handbook and stick to independent garages.
I'd then look at what is due in the next service and tell the garage what you want/need doing.

Most likely an interim service

Just my opinion.

I have the service history I'm looking at it smile

What I'm not clear on (sorry I'm someone who just goes to the garage when my car tells me to) is with the stupidly low mileage v age what is sensible to do here.

It looks like 2018 was a 50K so includes brake fluid, oil, oil filter, pollen filter and last years was an "interim" which is oil & oil filter change and a bunch of checks.

Main dealer is £199 for an interim.

ATS is £75 yikes

Details should be in the cars handbook, what is require at what mileage/age etc.

If it was me, I would be getting an oil change once a year and air filter every second year from an independent, and every second year just ask them to give it a once over to see if anything else needs doing.

Is it the current model? Would have thought it's in this:
https://www.mazda.co.uk/owners/videos-and-manuals/

Rough idea of cost (main dealer)
https://www.brayleys.co.uk/mazda/servicing/prices

Mazda has digital service records so should be able to look up (once registered) the service history.

I guess it depends if you trust the £75 to actually do anything or "find" other issues.

Yeah I looked and so it's 6th year in theory but again nothing I can think of that justifies that kind of money.

It's a bloody six year old Mazda 2 it's hardly high tech or I'm just totally out of touch with service pricing as I'm usually on a service plan.

Definitely an "interim" in my book.

If the car does 50 x 2 mile journeys a month I'd get it it done now.

If the car does 4 x 25 mile journeys a month I'd be tempted to leave it for up to 2 years if it's running on synthetic oil.

More like 4x 4 mile journeys especially right now.

ATS who are literally just down the road offer an interim service with Mobil oil and a filter change for £75

National Tyres are £80

The reputable independents quoted £150 for a "small oil service".

I give up as so many of the indies just don't have websites so other than asking for a literal breakdown of everything it's difficult to see quite what they're doing for that £150.

Or more likely are the ATS type places way too cheap @ £75

It's that time again.

I've basically had the car off my mum as right now she isn't driving and the mileage I do just doesn't justify spending much and it coincided with my car going back so it kills two birds with one stone.

Done around 6K in the last year mostly local but a once or twice weekly 40 miles commutes down dual carriageways.

I'm amazed at the variety in pricing when looking online at service costs as the Bosch service website shows the exact same service at £100 more at the independent in town than at the independent at the next town for example.

Then you have one garage's "full" service being another garages "major" service which doesn't help when you phone up and they seem slightly surprised that you want to know what they're actually doing for the price they quote.

Has anyone use these guys?

I think some garages aren’t keen on folks telling them “just to change the oil” when in fact any other problems they find end up taking them time. Usually take to my MX-5 to a specialist and specify which bits I want done with a service every 2 years and pre-MOT inspection before MOT if not a service.

That wouldn't end well biggrin

I don't mind paying to have the car serviced and properly it's just difficult to work out the "best" option given the age but low mileage and the massive range in pricing between interim full and major between different places.

Given it's a a Mazda 2 I'm probably overthinking it massively to be fair.

Yes, twice - was a local Nissan dealership.

No issues until the second visit (“discovered” plenty of work on an older car, at inflated prices).

Just an oil and filter plus check over , additionally a brake fluid change if its not been done before.
It's done such a low mileage other filters will still be virtually like new. Changing the whole lot is throwing money down the drain..
