Can I tax a car without it being registered in my name

Long story short
I purchased a nearly new car from a main dealer on 1st July
They registered it to my name at a random address, nothing to do with me
After lots of pissing about the dealer says they are trying to resolve it, but I can’t trust a word they say.

When it comes up for re taxing in jan, can I do that with the new keeper slip I have (assuming the issue is not resolved by then)

A combination of useless main dealer / Covid / dvla and gdpr throws any form of common sense out of the window sadly.

Well technically it is in my name, just to wrong address!

You'll probably need the new V5 as I expect the numbers you need to input are different. Apply for a new V5 if its free, get the dealer to do it if its not.

I’ve been onto the dealer, they’ve got my money so they seem very hard to get and comes out of

Sorry to tell you but car tax has not been transferrable for years your car is untaxed and has been since you bought it and your dealer would know this you need to go back to them or get a V62 form and fill it in.

So do you have a v5 for the car with a wrong address?

Just apply for the change of address and forget about the dealer.

I read it that the dealer taxed it for 6 months from the date of purchase.

Or he paid for 6 months VED when he bought the car and therefore he needs to pay for VED again in January...

Correct, dealer taxed it on my behalf on collection, then filled out the v5 with the correct name but some random address

So I have never seen the v5, I’m guessing it ended up at the random address

I'm presuming he hasn't got his new V5 as it's been sent to the wrong address after the dealer messed up. If he can find out the address I'd presume it would make life easier in applying for a new one or just changing the address as you have said. DVLA may need the 'wrong' address details to send something new out whichever way he goes about it

youll be able to tax it with the new owner slip. not 100 sure how a refund would work in your situation so i would stick to paying monthly just to avoid having to contact dvla if a refund was required

My son bought a car in August - the v5 had been lost (bought it off a deceased's relative's estate so all was known kosher) so we filled out the lost v5 form and sent off to DVLA, got a bit naughty as existing tax ran out at end of September (yes I know it's not transferrable but...).... as the new v5 hadn't , and still hasn't turned up (they only cashed the cheque for the fee last week) .... was a bit stuck - there didn't appear to be any online solution and DVLA didn't appear to be picking up the phone...

So a few creative permutations of their auto menu on the phone to the most obscure possible option eventually got me through to a human being - end result ys you can tax it in such a scenario - but only for 6 months., when it became clear the car only owed £30pa that got promptly kicked to touch and a year's tax was sorted....

At the moment DVLA are taxing anything at all over the phone if you say you have no V5. No questions asked as they know they have a huge backlog of issues to sort.

03007906802 seems to be the best number and if you can ring just before 9am you have half a chance of avoiding a very long queue. Press any option and ask to tax your car, you'll be put through to the correct person.
