As per the title really.

Does multicar actually save any money over casually shopping round each year for each car? Or is it just a convenience thing?

Your experiences please!

Saved me a decent wedge

I didn’t get mixed in with insuring other family members on my policy

Depends on what you’ve got and who it’s with. I’ve found sometimes it’s been smoke and mirrors with some cars being shown as cheaper but others being higher so it all evens out. Just like any insurance policy, get a quote as an individual policy and then mulitcar and see if it works for you.

We’ve got 4 cars and it’s cheaper to do them individually with a couple of insurance companies than altogether on one policy.

Far too many variables to answer your question. Only you will be able to tell if it's cheaper for you and your circumstances. Why not grab a cup of tea, put your feet up and phone a few companies to discuss? Far easier than getting the internet to decide.

FWIW - I'm on multi cover (house and cars) and it suits me.

Aviva multicar for me. Convenient and cheap.

Maybe I'm lucky but all my 4 cars are pretty much as cheap per vehicle as they would be insured separately via a comparison site.

Easily managed online, other than deleting vehicles which you need to call to do but no admin fees.

Aviva Multicar worked for us. Saved around £100 over insuring separately

Try NFU through a local broker been with them for years they are excellent and give genuine quality service and proper discount the more cars you own and understand car insurance tailored to your needs unlike the usual brain dead morons acting for mainstream companies based in far away call centres and such like lol.

Don't charge for policy changes either and don't need a long list of additional extras even those factory fitted ones unlike Admiral and their ilk to use as a ploy to avoid payment in the event of a claim.

I stopped in the end. Admiral seemed a good bet initially but each time the renewal was more than I could source the individual policies for. A call and much sucking of teeth, with them pointing out how good a deal they were offering me at every opportunity, they would come in £10 or £20 less than the individual combined total.
When I pointed out that as they were getting all the business they should be markedly cheaper, it just fell on deaf ears.
Did this for a year or two and then did it individually which, with more work granted, I could find cheaper.
If it's a good deal, take it but don't count on it being an ongoing thing!

I've used Admiral multi car for the past few years.

When their renewal came in this year, it was up about £100 over last years price. I went through all the comparison sites, but couldn't beat their price for my three cars.

It didnt stop me having a web chat with them to query the increased premium, resulting in £140 quid being knocked off the price.

Well worth the 10 minutes of my time on the web chat.

Yep, roughly my experience with Admiral. Decent two-car deal, but a 10 min negotiation required annually.

It worked for me.
Having more with them, noting that as I work I can’t use them all the time, appeared to come out with a great price.

I pay £2300 for 8 cars and a house.

Same as most insurance...good deal then creeps up the longer you stay with them unless you haggle.
Mine is Admiral but only on a two car policy and they usually match (reluctantly) at renewal time if you shop around

I think it general, it depends on how much you value convenience (one payment, one renewal date, no need to notify other Insurers on claims) over value.

Let's face it Insurance in the UK is price led for most people. So the Insurers who offer 20% off for multi-car are generally not competitive when 30-40% discounts can be had for new customer policies with other Insurers. Also if your Insurer mirrors no claims, then having 60% off with an instant NCD is even netter than a multicar policy.

Admiral has worked out very good for me but I only have two cars. They've insured both for less than I was paying for one the previous year. The renewal was similar too.
I'll keep an eye on them at renewal but so far they've been pretty cheap - plus the £50 refund during Lockdown 1.0

It depends what you're after really. If you have 2 everyday cars and 2 drivers, then it might not work for you. Start adding more cars than drivers and the savings start to mount up - some of the specialist insurers recognise that you can only drive one car at a time and rate accordingly. It's worth checking that the main stream players (e.g. Aviva, LV) can offer the same level of cover on classic and other specialist vehicles e.g. agreed value as they often don't.

I've always used Heritage Car Insurance, they are a specialist insurer that can cover everything on a multi car policy - https://www.heritagecarinsurance.co.uk/insurance/m...

To get my two cars onto a multi-car policy I had to sync up the start dates of the policies. This meant buying a 30-day policy for one car.

Admiral were so keen to get me on their multi-car policy that they actually paid me £50 for the privilege of insuring the Maserati for a month! Definitely the cheapest cover I've ever bought and a bit of a surreal experience.

The joint policy is about £100 cheaper than two separate policies and track days are explicitly allowed, so I'm happy with it.

Admiral multi car has worked for me for several years. The more cars the cheaper it is to keep adding more on to the policy. They also mirrored ncb on two cars in my wife's name, meaning I've got a spare full ncb to use of/when car number 4 ever arrives.

I've found them pretty helpful, albeit over the years multi car hasn't always been the cheapest so.ive dipped in and out as needed. I think last 4 years at least have been multi tho.

I had admiral multi car for a few years, then the price got too high, phoned them and they reduced by 15%, got 2 separate policies from 2 different companies and saved 25% over admirals revised price. Phoned them again but they wouldn't budge. so after the first year renewal was fine, after year 2 it was OK as was year 3, but year 4 they were taking the Michael. Seems to be the way these days.
