I have a Mini R55 Clubman and the previous owner had changed the tachometer due to it failing. Everything has been fine, but on thursday i started the car and the mileage has changed from 106k to 28k (might have been the mileage on the new tacho). I think the previous owner never got the new tachometer coded to the new car.

All the mileage looks good on the old MOT's, but is mileage correction legal? Can I get someone just to recode the new tacho?

It's only illegal if you tamper with the mileage to deceive or misrepresent the vehicle.

Adding mileage for it to reflect the correct mileage isn't an issue. Plenty of backstreet garages that will do this, just make sure to remind them you want the opposite of their usual procedure wink

After giving all those haircuts they should have plenty left over to do hair extensions instead!

Is it unusual for mileage to be stored on tacho? Just asking as I've never come across that before wobble

Yes on a Mini as the speedo is in the center of the dash, rev counter is on the steering column and has the mileage etc on the display.

The part that records the mileage is usually linked to the car main ecu. I wouldn’t have thought a simple swap of units would work otherwise mini low mileage display units would be worth a few quid second hand

The mileage is often stored in both cluster and various other control units including engine.

Not sure about BINIs, but on BMWs of a similar era both the cluster and engine store the mileage, and if there's any discrepancy you get a little dot next to the miles on the cluster which can't be removed.

Yeah mine has the dot on the mileage to show there is an error. I think the Mini is the same as the BMW in terms of where it’s stored.

The mileage stored on the MINI ecu can be wiped to zero and mileage on the speedo adjusted to the correct mileage. If it's not done this way there will be confliction between the two units..

Many years ago, a trader pal of a friend, bought in a 3.8 Litre Jaguar MK2. He took the speedo out and was stunned to see a little note attached to it, which read “
Oh no, not again “ laugh
